Flourocarbon leader question

Featured Replies

On my 2 rods I have braided line with flourocarbon leaders. A lot of lakes/ponds fishing the bottom works really well, I'm wondering if my bait will be able to stay on the bottom better if I use just only flourocarbon. What effect on action does my flourocarbon leader have?

Very little or none.

It wont affect your baits ability to stay on the bottom, the fluoro leader will serve the purpose of disguising the line and thats about it. The fluoro leader can also act as a shock absorber for the braid. Fluoro has a little more stretch than braid so it will help not tear hooks from the fishes mouth.

Being more dense, the fluoro leader will tend to sink in the water column keeping your baits down. Most braids float but there are a few that sink (Sufix 832) but generally braid is thin enough that there's minimal resistance anyway. The fluoro leader will keep your baits down.

What is it you're fishing on the bottom?

Jigs and spybait type lures.

Most jigs are designed to fish on the bottom and popular sizes are 3/8 and 1/2 oz without trailer, I don't think any line is going to keep it off of the bottom.  FC leader with braid is going to offer some shock resistance during hookset, the line is less visible in water(maybe), abrasion resistance to some cover and structure is better.   Spybaits  to my knowledge are slow sinking baits that are counted down, often used to attract suspending fish.  If I were fishing this technique I would ditch the braid and fish them on very light  FC line, less visible, light line allows the bait to more  freely and naturally.  I don't think the spybait would be a  bait I would work the bottom with.    Suspending fish in clear water can be a real challenge for anyone to catch, spybaits are kind of a finesse approach in my book.

Don't know if this helps any but if you have more specific questions I am sure you will get some great answers.

For jigs or weightless plastics I don't think it will matter much. However, with the spybait technique, the advocates seem to prefer straight fluoro. I'll find out which is right this season. :)
