What about the Davy knot?

Featured Replies

Hi, I am new to the forum, and am excited to read some great tips from obviously some great fishermen.  Just yesterday I saw a demonstration on U tube of the Davy Knot.  It looks terrific for that quick knot that could be tied even in low light late in the evening. (old eyes)  My question is, would this be a good know for bass fishing with either braid or Mono?  It seems to be shown predominately on fly fishing videos.  Thanks for your help    jim

Hmm...I guess I'll wait to read comments from guys that have used the knot, but it doesn't look like there are enough wraps to secure mono, fluro or braid.

I think I recall that there is a Double Davy knot also. Maybe it's better?

yes, and it is also very quick and easy to tie

The Palomar is about as strong and simple as it gets

I use the Davy Knot all the time when I fly fish for Trout and Steelhead.  Really is quick and helps you save on tippet.  However, I have never used it for bass fishing for one main reason, the difference in rods used.  All my fly rods are 9' to 10' long and have a lot of "give" to them.  So when fighting a fish with a fly rod, those quick burst runs can be asorbed by the rod and not as much stress is introduced into the line and knot.  When bass fishing, you are using shorter, stiffer rods and there is more strain in the line.  Therefore, I never felt confident enough in the Davy Knot to try on a $25 Megabass Vision 110 or some other lure that I am hoping to get a Smallmouth to smash.

I use a Davy knot almost exclusively as a flouro to lure connection. I haven't found another knot that is as strong when using flouro. The fact that it's so easy to tie is just a bonus! You can do a double, triple or quadruple Davy if you feel you need extra wraps. I've been confident enough to use it fishing for bass, salmon, pike and even musky. I've been using it for about two years and have never had a Davy knot fail.
