Kayak trailer...

Last summer went the craigslist route and got a jet ski trailer that lasted me a few months before al later internal rust that i couldn't see decided to take it's life....liuckily i was at the boat ramp and not driving when the tongue decided to give way.  Upon further inspection, there was a lot more rust than i saw originally and it wasn't worth repairing.  Luckily for me I didn't have much invested in it so no big loss.  Since hen I have been on the search for a new trailer to haul my kayak and serve for light utility duty and for trips to the beach etc....

Put my order in yesterday for one of these guys and cannot wait for it to get here :)

It isn't cheap but i didn't want to have to buy another one down the road and the reviews on this one are stellar and that includes ones that are 10 years old and an older design.  It can haul around 500lbs and the cage is removable so you can just have the bars.  The floor also doesn't come standard but i figured  would like to have that so i can haul gear on there.  Should be here in about a week or two.

Having the other trailer for the short time i did spoiled me on loading and unloading :)

Congrats ~ Sweet looking rig

You know I'm a small trailer fan boy.

The convenience far out weighs the cost.

Neat trailer. What was the cost if you don't mind including it for others looking. I bought a used 5x8 utility trailer someone put a wood floor in. It's great. I have it set up to pull 3 kayaks and all the gear you want. I could(should) be able sale it for what I paid for the trailer and accessories. I like your trailer, seems light and easy to move.

I was thinking about the yakima rack and roll too but that thing only has a 350lb weight limit with upgraded shocks and doesn't have the cage or floor other than buying a basket of some sort.  The one advantage i saw with yakima was it being aluminum but other than that i think the sportsrig is a better product for my needs.

With a little one on the way, having all my stuff on the trailer and ready to go will be nice when I have a few hours to get out.

With all the options and shipping (which wasn't cheap) and a discount i got it was around $2600.

I thought about the utility trailer route but i am not a fan.  the suspensions on them aren't designed to carry lighter loads and i would have to fab up a bunch of things to make it work.  if i need a trailer for primarily utility work and occasionally kayaks i would have went that route but mine is the exact opposite.  I will use mine maybe 3-4 times a year for the home depot run or trip to the beach but for having a kayak, it will get used probably 50 times a year at least, if not more.

I was looking for a specific item to do the job at hand and the roof rack on a wheels if you will, fit the bill.

Update on the trailer....

So i finally got around to putting it together last night and things went relatively well with a few minor snafus.  They forgot one set of load bar brackets that hold the cross bars in, which sucks because i can't really use it without them, they switched the sides for the wires to the taillights, easy fix but took about an hour and when packaging it up, the spray foam they used as cushioning got on to the rear cross member.

So i called them up about the bracket as soon as i found out and talked to a guy i had been emailing and he is gonna send them part out right away and for my trouble, he will send me a jack stand and a grab handle free of charge.  After sending that email, I noticed the trailer wiring was wrong so i snapped a quick picture and then fixed it by just undoing the hangers and swapping the sides.  Sent him a quick email to say hey, I ran into this issue so you might want to double check whoever is putting these together prior to shipping and i have to admit i was kind of concerned about having these issues.  I also asked about how to get the spray foam off and what they recommended.

His response was to send a picture so he could keep it for his quality control purposes and then he addressed the spray foam.  he basically said he had some new people in his shipping department and that to be honest, the foam is a pain to get off and if you do get it off, the trailer might not look exactly the same color do to some slight discoloration that would not impact the trailer at all other than aesthetically.  He gave me two options, they would ship me out a new frame and then i would ship back the one i already have or i could live with the possible discoloration and they would send me a spare tire free of charge along with the brackets, jack stand and grab handle for my inconvenience.

I went with the spare tire option, I can deal with a little discoloration since it is gonna get beat up eventually anyways.  So basically because of some slight hassle i had i am basically going to have every option they have available on a trailer for free.  I have to say that i wasn't expecting any of the free items and wouldn't have even asked but it was a nice gesture on their part and if their trailer holds up as well as their customer service, I have no concerns about being happy with it for a long, long time.

Does tick me off though since i was hoping to use it this weekend but i guess one more weekend won't hurt....

Well, here is the trailer al assembled and ready to go.  It is a little tall with the cage on there but it is sitting on PVC so it slides pretty easily.  I'll see after a few launches if i want to leave the cage on there all the time or only put it on there when needed.

Looking good man!

I think I'd put additional bow support on there.  Otherwise, it looks cool!

I actually have 3" PVC pipe running about 4 1/2 feet underneath the boat attached to the cross bars.  I would think that would be ok for support.  They make a bar extender kit but it doesn't work with the cage.  I am sure after a few trips with the trailer i'll dial in what exactly i want and how to rig it.  I want to make a lockable box too for gear so that is next on the list of stuff to make or buy for sure.

Don't take this as a bad judgement against the tralers, but as many problems as you've now had with it, I'm not sure I'd buy one. And that is quite the long tongue...The CS sounds great and It does look cool though.

I did think about this when i was running into snafus.  I then figured well, nothing was structurally wrong and having worked in production type environments before, I know things happen.  Now if something was off center or parts didn't fit correctly, I would have without a doubt sent it back and not had a second thought.  Since the customer service was so good I have zero issues that they will resolve anything that happens in the future.

As far as the tongue goes, it looks a lot longer than it really is because of the small cargo area.  I needed it for the length of my kayak.  I could probably get away without but it would be tight for sure.

Nice, I'm still in the process of redoing the trailer I bought. Can't wait to use it.
