Line for cranks

Featured Replies

What type of line / rod setups do you guys use for cranking?

I used to have a MM cranking setup but being a bank fisherman I didn't like having too many rods and sold it. I now currently use a MF St Croix with mono, and just slightly back the drag off a little more than normal when I use it for crankbaits. I sort of want to switch up that rod to flouro but I'm not sure how it would affect my cranking with this particular rod?

Basically, I'd like to be able to use this rod a little more for bottom contact fishing (which is when I love flouro), instead of always carrying my jig rod around with me as well.

I now use a Fenwick HMG GT72M-F-CB Crankbait Casting Rod 7'2" one piece rod Medium rod power, fast rod action with a older Lews SS1H 6.4:1 spooled with 12lb Big Game Mono. I haven't tried flouro as I just have got started using it. This is my first dedicated cranking setup. I haven't ever really thrown cranks (excluding lipless) much so what little I did I just used what ever rod I had that I wanted to use.

I havent used it much yet so the jury is still out on it but I like the feel of it and it was priced well enough to make it worth my time.

Well, you don't have to have dedicated rigs to fish anything, but if you use crankbaits a lot you really should reconsider your options.

My dedicated line for treble hooks is Sunline Defier Armilo.

I am interested in this topic.  I recently bought some 12 lb Red Label but was wondering if there is anything better.  I fish for a lot of clear water smallies so the line has to be either fluoro or fluoro-coated.

Several BR members like the Red Label, but I think it is too stiff for mainline, okay for leaders.

For spinning tackle I would recommend Seaguar InvizX #8; for baitcasting Seaguar AbrazX #12.

Don't crank as much as a lot of you guys but when I do, I use a Phenix X11 composite rod, JM Sig reel spooled with 12# Yo Zuri.

Wouldn't change a thing

What kind of cranking?  Lipless cranks I use 17 or 20 Iron Silk or some other 17 or 20 lb test.  Square bills, I like the most abrasion resistant line I can get along with reasonable casting distance.  Deep cranking I want a thinner line, both to get more distance and more depth.   That means 10 or 12 pound.    A few weeks ago when the Berkley Trailer was in town I got some 14 lb  Armor Coated Trilene on sale.   It looks and feels a lot like the old Iron Silk.  I have a dedicated rig now with that line and a Med Action rod and the plan is to use it to throw DC 16 Timber Tigers into deeper trees.   My hope is that I can get 10 to 12 feet down - a reasonable distance from the boat, with this set up.   Time will tell.
