No more mudbugs?

Featured Replies

I went to the major outlets looking to buy a few mudbugs and was shocked to learn that they don't make them anymore.  There are a bunch on ebay, but before I go there I figured I offer to buy from my buds on the froum  (see trading post)

What has taken their place?  I liked the mud buds because that big lip would deflect off of anything.  They also had alot of vibration and just plain look cool.

I'm guessing big coffin shaped plastic lipped  cranks?

anyone know for sure?

Avid, I haven't seen a mudbug for sale in years. I know I have a few, somewhere in storage. Storage means I have no idea where it is. It's about time for me to start organizing my tackle again. If I run across any of these baits, I'll PM you. If I find some, I'll send "em to you. I'm gonna guess, that when I find them, they're gonna need new hardware. Storage also means an unheated garage. Probably all rusted. I'll let you know.

I know I bought several, on advice from a pretty good fisherman here, who claimed that this bait was the best one ever invented for cranking deep structure. Well, it may be for him. I never caught a thing on one, and not for lack of trying.

Cheers,

GK

Avid,

Have you tried this site, they show the mudbugs.

http://www.lurenet.com/catalog.aspx?catID=Mud-Bug

Certain times of the year, a mudbug is always tied on my rods.

I love Toledo Bend in June when the mudbug hatch is taking place.

Hope you score, i still find them in a few mom and pops stores. Toledo Town and tackle always has a big selection.

Catt lives on T Bend, he might be able to tell you if they still have the big selections.

Matt

Don 't know why some of the big places no longer carry them and apparently it 's in extintion process.

Mattfly,

thanks, but I checked out lurenet and could not find a place to order the mudbugs.  they show all the other arbogast lures with ordering info.

Am I missing something?

If you or cat have a link to a shop that stocks them I would appreciate it.

I'm still open to members who have some laying around in decent conditon.

thanks again,

avid

Hey Avid when we r at the Fork we can go to Louisina and have all the mudbugs with red poatoes, corn on the cob and boiled in Zatarans Crawfish Boil u can handle ;)

Avid,      I was told to search E-bay from time to time.     A guy got his last few from there.

Still looking for you.

Matt

I was wondering how good these lures are, my fishing partner has a few and hasnt had any luck, im not sure which colors he has, but he was upset because between the 2 of us we always have luck with arbogast products, i think he has got to give them more time

It's a date  :-*

Yeah, it looks like ebay will be the source.  Just as an FYI,  I never thought they were a great lure, but I always had some.  They do deflect off of wood very well, but the coffin lipped crank probably works as well or better.

I lost the ones I had when my tackle box joined Luca Brazi (swimming with the fishes) last year, and I missthem.  My tackle box just doesn't look right without a few old rusty mudbugs.

Ebay can be a pain, but it is the absoulute source for nearly everything ever made.

AVid,

I am curious to see if Catt use them on T Bend anymore?   I still see hundreds tied on when the crawdad hatch is own.

You can take a short walk on the beach during the Sealy's Big Bass SPlasn in June on T Bend and see hundreds of beached boats with mudbugs tied on.   Over 2500 anglers, its not hard to see a little of every thing.

Good luck, if I happen to see some in a mom an pops bait shop, would you like me to snag some if your color is in stock?

Gladly do so.

Matt.

that's very generous of you matt,  I just don't want to pay premium prices because they have become "collectors items" LOL>  some of the ebayers are already into this. the colors I prefer are the brown craw and chartruese craw. 1/2 oz or 5/8th.

I don't require the box, so second hand is ok just need the conditon to be good or better.

thanks

avid

CrazedLIF- absolutely get yourself Mudbugs 1/4oz in Bone orange belly and Firetiger. They work well especially at Forge and Zone II.

Hey y'all, sorry I've been away for a while but a very dear friend's wife past away recently they had been married for 58 years.

Avid & Matt

I haven't been to Toledo Tackle in months but I'm sure they have some, I'll take a look at our local tackle shops. My best luck with mudbugs has always been in late fall and early winter with a crawfish color.

thank you very much earthworm, ill give them a shot, they do look really cool underwater, thats one of the lures that the fishing partner uses has trouble with and the other guy then uses and sees if it in fact works, gonna have to show my buddy up on this one lol

Avid, for what ever reason I can't find a single mudbug any where?   ;)

I know,

For some reason Pradco nixed em.

There are millions of them out there so I will never pay collector prices, but it's always sad to see an ole standye, go to the big fishin hole in the sky  :'(

Avid,

Do you ever use the hellbenders?     Not quite the same design of metal bill, but sure does seem to catch fish still.

Matt.

Hey Avid me and Ron have to go to Mauch Chunk to put our boat into storage this week when we are there threre is a old tackle store in Jim Thorpe that has a lot of old and discontinued stuff in bins Ill give a look for you when we go

Muddy ;)

thank you Senior Muddy MON

feel free to pick up two for me if he has any.  Just NOT the big 1 oz.  anything from 1/4 to 5/8 is ok by me.

Hope  you find some nice toys for both of us.

avid

take a look at northern bass shops. Possible a .com. I used to get them there in a pinch. I do prefer the older ones circa the late 70's

I sold some used ones on Ebay earlier this year got more for them used then I paid for them new. They were out of production at that time and still may be.

darn- one of my favorite lures!  my supply has been going down and I have planned to restock soon!  best feature of the 'bug is that one does not have to guess if he has a bite- the bass SLAMS it.  it does require lots of work to crank it all day.  I have several old low ratio reels (3.8-1) that I use for these type lures.  I'll just have to baby the few that I have remaining.  my favorite color is a light green/shad used in summer/fall.  chartruse also good then.  crawfish color good in late winter/spring.  largest bass on MB is 7#.
