Electrical problem with FF & Trolling motor

Featured Replies

I was out today on the water.  (Only caught a couple dinks..water very muddy from recent rains  :-[) Anyway, I had my Garmin fishfinder on and when I went to use my foot operated trolling motor, I noticed the FF would go off.  When I let loose of the foot pedal the FF would come back on.  Everytime I hit the foot pedal, the FF would go blank.  Anyone have this happen to you?  Anyone have any suggestions  on what I can do to fix this problem?

FYI, the boat is small and I have a small outboard (rudder type) so I have one battery and the FF and the trolling motor are powered from it.  Thanks for any suggestions.  I have to get this fixed, going back out Sat. morning.

You either have a loose connection,  dirty battery or a bad battery. Check your battery connection 1st. If your using the wing nuts they will work loose. Clean your battery with a mild solution of baking soda & water. Rinse real good. Check any connections you might have between the battery & equipment. Go to the menu on your depth finder & turn the battery voltage on then use your trolling motor. If the voltage drops below 11 make sure you have water in your battery & charge it. If it does it again have your battery checked. If you are near a Wal-Mart they will do it. Hope this helps.

i had it happen to me. It was a weak battery, didnt hold a full charge. When i used the t motor it took away avalible power to the ff so it shut off.

Thanks SCBASSIN and John.  I will check these things out.  I appreciate your assistance.  :o

I agree, that is definately a battery issue.

Nice work guys.

If it keeps happening you may need to run the depthfinder off the cranking battery rather than the TM battery.  I've heard running them both off the same battery can cause interference.  I wired mine into the cranking battery to avoid any trouble.

I agree that it is a battery issue, I had it happen to me when i connected a trolling motor and a fishfinder to the same 12v battery.bought a new battery and connected the fishfinder to the seperate battery and it was fixed.
