Smallmouth spots near Howard County, MD?

Featured Replies

I have caught many largemouth, but haven't caught any smallmouth over 6". I now want to try fishing for them. Any good areas for smallmouth near Howard County, Maryland?

BTW, I just want a generic area that has them, no your honey holes. If you aren't comfortable posting your favorite stretch of a creek on this thread, you can send me a PM. Thanks!

Liberty reservoir would be your best bet for a smallie

Upper Potomac in Frederick area. Parts of the upper Patapsco have them as well (Daniels area)

Doesn't have a bunch of largemouths instead? The last I went there, I saw a bunch of weeds, green and warm water, and I got largemouths.

Daniels Area seems great.

Are there any smallies in the Middle Patuxent? I live near the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area, but the creek (a tributary) that I fish only has 6" or less smallies. Does the Middle Patuxent (main river) have good smallies?

I fish Liberty, Loch Raven and Prettyboy. As far as numbers of smallies go to Prettyboy there are a ton of them there, but I will say that some of the biggest smallies I've seen have come from Liberty. If you really want a smallie you should've been there a month or so ago if your bank fishing, because the smallies spawn before the LM and head to deep water which makes them hard to catch from the shore. The upper Potomac is an awesome smallie spot and a lot of the area can be waded. It's just no where near HoCo.

Thanks. other than the Upper Potomac, and those reservoirs, there are no other places near HoCo where there are smallies?

The Little Patuxent River has them but don't expect anything big.  I  assume the Middle Patuxent has them, too, since the "rivers" meet up near Savage Mill.

Your best bet for smallmouth bass in MD would either be the upper potomac or Liberty/Prettyboy. If you have a kayak fish the upper potomac, if not and you are a shore fisherman then go to Lib/Prettyboy. I have been fishing both Liberty and Prettyboy since I was a kid and can tell you there are giant smallmouth bass in both.

Your question was any near Howard County.  I grew up in HoCo.  Try the Patapsco river down near Daniels, also goon down near the iron bridge.  Also the section down near  Ellicott City.  I had a friend I fished with that lived in the Oella section near the olg paper mill.

Fish the Upper Potomac for SM in general which can be waded at most spots. In case you didn't know the MD State record SM came from Liberty.
