Jdm shimano reels

Recommended Posts

I am looking into getting either a shimano scorpion older red version not the new 70 or a shimano bremous (don't think I spelled that right) wondering what y'all think and which is a better reel. Thanks!

Go with the Scorpion 1000xt. They are incredible reels and you can always swap gears to something faster. TT did a review of both and the Brenious did not fair that well. I have 2 Scorpioin 1000xt one that has the stock gears and one with the Brenious gears. They are fantastic. Also the stock bearings in the reel are quite good. Out of the box the Scorpion is a great reel that can do a lot of things well that I think you will enjoy.

A 1001XT is a Curado 51E with the AR ratchet removed and smoke brake blocks. They're cool but not mind blowing.

The Brenious is designed for saltwater fishing with very thin braid. Nice 7.7:1 gears though.

The aldebaran mg7 isn't that much more than the 2 reels you are looking at and is a bih step up in my opinion.

The scorpion 1000xt is a more all around reel than the brenious. It's basically a curado 50e, while the brenious has a shallow narrow spool designed for light braid. It all depends on what you want in a reel. The scorpion will handle the widest range of lures, and if you want to go super light you can always buy an avail spool to swap in. The only reason I would look at the brenious is for light jigs/ plastics because of the faster ratio. I don't like braid because i fish a very rocky Highland lake though so if i wanted a faster ratio I'd just swap gears in the 1000xt

Bearings are different and the tolerances are tighter within the reel as well.

I have 4 of the Shimano Scorpion 1001 Reels. These are the older red reels you ask about, they have a 6.2:1 gear ratio & the 4x4 SVS system. These reels are excellent & well built as stated above. It's hard to find a good one , e-bay would be your best bet.

What are you using the reel for? The Brenious has a very low capacity and is only suited for flipping/pitching.

You do NOT want the Brenious.

Scorpion XT 1000 is great. Buy a set of Hedge hog bearings from the Trap and it will do anything you want. You could also get a set of core 7 ratio gears, they are aluminium tho, if you want to speed things up, instead of the 7.7 brenious gears as another option.

Perfect reel IMO.

I have the Scorpion XT 1001 and the new Scorpion 71HG.  If I were to buy another, it would be the XT 1001.  The 71 is a nice reel, but it's got a few more moving parts with the different brake systems and such, and I'm still working on dialing it in after a month of fishing with it.  With XT 1001, it took me almost no time to dial it in, and I don't have to mess with it any more.

Then the Brenious is out of the question. Get the Scorpion.

I read that according to Shimano, there will soon be little difference between the JDM and international models.
