Lure Advice - Smallmouth in the Spring River (AR)

Featured Replies

I'm heading to the Spring River in AR this weekend to chase a smalljaw or two.  Any suggestions for lures to throw at them?

I've never fished it, but any smallmouth river I have fished, the old standards are excellent confidence baits.  When in doubt, 3-4" grubs, tubes, and in-line spinners will always produce.  A 3" popper in low light or overcast conditions probably ranks right behind those three.  If you can describe the section of river you're fishing, I might be able to make some more specific suggestions.

Thanks guys! Life got in the way and I had to cancel, but I'll file your suggestions away for next time.

I would throw your confidence baits first and see how you make out. I'd bet they will work there. Crankbaits, jigs, 4" worms, grubs and spinnerbaits might all work on the same day. I'm finding that out over the last few weeks. I just keep switching up my whole time out. I won't beat to death one lure my whole time out. I know guys who do. Or they beat a color to death.

If you want to catch smallmouth in any river system, I can almost guarantee that a 3" curly tailed grub dressed on an 1/8 oz. ball head jig, is about as good as it gets. Simplify.....simplify. :)

Never fished it personally, but l do mainly 95% of my smallie fishing in a large river in my area.. soft plastic crawfish on a jighead such as the Yum craw papi are great baits. Also as someone mentioned above 3 inch grubs soft plastic work great also.. try topwater action early morning with floating crankbaits such as Rapala Pop R or buzzbaits.. later in the day when fish maybe deeper try Senkos rigged wacky style, or Texas.. if hellgrammites are plentiful in the body of water  a hellgrammite imitation has always done me well.. Rebel makes a hellgrammite plug and there are also some soft Plastics on the market and I believe Berkley gulp makes one as well. Good luck!
