Adding rubber mats to Fiberglass boat - good or bad?

Recommended Posts

I have 2 spots in my fiberglass boat that probably had rubber mats at one time (I am the 2nd owner) but don't know, I think these are tool cubbies. I made a mat for each and I also made a mat for my Terrova's foot pedal to protect the gelcoat. The boat used to have a Fortrex and the foot pedal was screwed down. I don't like having my foot pedal screwed down because I like to move it around. If I'm fishing the right side of my boat I move the foot pedal to the right side of the boat and vice versa. (I do have screw holes and holes were the Fortrex was mounted that I am going to fill with silicone.)

I'm just wondering if this is the right kind of rubber mat or if they will move around on their own and scratch up the fiberglass even worse than not having the mats.

That looks nice I think it will work fine. If you are worried about them flying around I might put some stick on velcro on their back and on the fiberglass.  Put 4 small pieces say an inch in from the corners, that would leave you the ability to grab a corner and pull it up incase you want to clean them or clean the fiberglass under them.

Looks good, the mats shouldn't scratch anything.

I agree and don't think they'll hurt anything.

One suggestion.  Take the mat out, let it dry and vacuum the tray.  Grit and grime will naturally accumulate beneath the mat.  After vacuuming, clean and wax the gel coat.

Good idea. Thx!

Have you considered something like bed liner or one of the spray or paint on coatings for in there? Would alleviate the grit issue and would be hard to lose.
