dachtor
.........for a trolling motor and why? Cable steer? Digital steer? Remote? Wireless foot control? Do you prefer the models with the "Constant on" option?

Cephkiller
I have a Minn Kota Powerdrive. I love the constant on setting, the infinitely variable speed and the length of the foot pedal cable (18'). I do not like the slow steering response and the noise it makes when steering. Madhouse27
I've always considered the cable to be the most durable of the available systems. They are quiet and seem like you they would be relatively easy to fix if there was a problem, plus there is less to break in the first place. About the only thing I wish I could change about mine is the size of the pedal. I like the sleek little pedal of the powerdrive style motors but that incessant buzz buzz they make can be a bit irritating.
NBR
I have never had a power drive and am not apt to buy one. It seems like any time I have something to repair on my boat, motor or trailer it is something electrical. Replace the batteries, clean the contacts of every thing and on and on. DC and corrosion don't get along well together and metal and moisture equals corrosion.
Upnorth
MinnKota cable steer. I've had it on my last 3 boats and see no reason to change in the future.
dachtor
Those of you who use the cable steer systems, does your particular model have a "constant on" feature? I feel that this would reduce the amount of work necessary to keep the motor on and the boat moving as I would not have to have my foot on the controller all the time. Thanks for all the comments. Triton_Mike
This is a no brainer for me. Motor Guide Tour editions which are cable. But if your a striper guy the remote has uses. Mike
sodaksker
I used to have an auto pilot power drive. I liked the auto pilot for certain situations but, the power drive steering is much to slow to react if you need to make a sudden turn to avoid rocks, wood etc.. My latest boat came with a motor guide with cable foot control. I like the cable much better for the reaction time on manueverability, but, this does not have a "constant on" switch, which I did find valuable in certain situations. I plan on replacing this motor guide with a minn kota maxxum pro, It has the cable foot control and I think it has the "constan on" switch as well. If not, I would much rather trade the manueverability factor for the "constant " switch.

I have a Minn Kota All Terrain 65 with cable steering. It has five speeds. You can select your speed and you can select if you want it to run constantly or only when you depress the round thing on the pedal. About the only time I use the constant on setting is when I'm trying to stay stationary when fighting the wind or when my big motor has died and I'm using the trolling motor to get back to the ramp. Hopefully the latter won't be the case this year in my new (to me) ride!
NBR
dactor, I have a 65# Minn Nota Maxxum with cable steer and a constant on feature. I replaced an old Motor Guide abot 3 years ago. I thought the constant on feature would be nice since the power on button was somewhat hard to feel with the MG. The MKota power button is easier to use than the one on the old MG and I rarely use the constant on feature.
Super User cart7t Posted January 28, 2006 Super User Share Posted January 28, 2006 Cable steer. I tried a power drive for several years and it was OK except for the extremely slow response time and the noise when turning. If they could figure out a way to speed the turn time up, at least double, I'd buy another one.
Rattlinrogue
I also have the Minn Kota All Terrain with cable steer. It has 5 speeds and a "constant" setting on it,which I never use.
Jawjacker
Cable, less things to go wrong & easy to fix if it does. I use constant on some, mostly fighting wind or current & on long days fatigue.
BASSMACHINE
I have a motorguide "cable" I do use the constant on feature. Makes it really nice when you are fishing visiable cover. Also think that by using it you don't spook as many fish, because the motor isn't kicking on and off all the time. Since I started using the constant on feature I have noticed that by back does not hurt as much at the end of the day, because I don't have to keep my foot on the pedal as often, more comfort, less pain, and more fish it is the way to go!
