Spinning reel problem (urgent)

Featured Replies

This has never happened to me before and I know how to use a spinning reel. I got it in a combo at basspro (ugly stik gx2 combo) and got line spooled on their as well. The heaviest line on the reel said 10 lb test but he put on and recommended 12 lb test. When I flip up the bail, and yes, I hold the line with my finger, the reel starts shooting line everywhere and I haven't even casted. Help?

They put too much line on the reel.

Just like Scott said the reel is over filled, just take some of that line that is jumping off and remove it.   It wont take long to figure out about how much you actually need.

Thanks a lot you fixed my problem!!

Besides being overfilled, 12lb line is kinda heavy for a spinning reel.  It will limit your casting distance a little bit.

I noticed when I user to get line spooled at the bait shop they tend to over-spool. Their motto seems to be better to give too much than too little.

I peel off a bunch of line to use as leader material. It helps with the problem you are having.

They put too much line on the reel. Also with a spinning reel, the line will twist way worse with it reeled off the spool one way, and the other way it doesnt. I always have to check when spooling. 12lb is usable on spinning but I prefer 10 and 8

I use Excalibur Silver Thread Copolymer line way less memory. I use from 6lb, to 8lb to 10lb on my med spin setups.

Did they charge by the foot?

If the line is flourocarbon it is definitely too heavy for spin.  If mono, it won't cast all that well , but if the spool is properly filled it should not be jumping off.  Sounds a lot like flouro.  If proper fill doesn't fix it, take some of the line off and try a good, limp, 8 pound mono.
