Mattlures baby bass problem?

Featured Replies

i got one of these baby bass like a week ago and it doesnt seem to swim straight. it goes up on its left side and i have no way of getting it to swim straight. anyone else have these issues with the baits. i wrote matt and he told me to try putting it in boiling water to straighten the body but it didn't work and i think its the molding of the body onto the hook. hopefully he will give me an exchange for the bait.... i was really liking the look of it to...

I bought three, one runs straight, the other two "lean." I have only fished the striper pattern (which is one of the leaners) and caught two small bass. So, I have no idea if it is important or not, but my baits have a similar pattern.

Try slowing it down.  Also knot pressure is a leading cause of "lean" in a swimming bait of any kind... that's why so many crankbaits come with split rings.  Tie one of the loop knots and most of that goes away... unless you are reeling too fast.

I've seen Matt offer to exchange baits in the past... if it's bad, I'm sure he'll take care of you.

Thanks, buddy!

I'll give it a try (Rapala Knot?).

Regarding speed: There seems to be a minimum speed that is required to achieve a swimming motion. At that speed, two of my baits lean. Maybe tying another knot will be the ticket.

I have the same problem with the baby bass. I noticed the line tie is covered with rubber/plastic (like overspray) and have been meaning to clean this off to see if it helps or corrects the problem. Has anyone done that?........................Al

I'll also try the loop knot....Thanks

If the bait is crooked it could cause it to lean. It is soo easy to straighten the bait. All you need to do is put the back half of the bait in boiling water for a minute or two and the bait will automaticly return to its original straightness. When the bait is straight it will run straight. I do not know why but some line/knots tend to make them leam a little. If you guys cant get them to swim straight I will exchange them for you, or just straighten the ones you send back. My packaging keeps them pretty staright but its not perfect. I personaly hang my baits by the hook eyes. Also remember, Slow down. 90% of my bites are fishing the baits as slow as I can swim them or bouncing them along the bottom. with these baits you WANT the fish to get a good look at them.

RW I am glad to hear your getting some fish on them  :) I was beginning to wonder what was taking so long  :) Keep throwing them, you WILL get big smallies on them
