Fall fishing on the Quabbin Reservoir

Featured Replies

Had a good day today! 5 or 6 2-3 pounders and a ton of dinks.  Estimating that the biggest one was a low 3.  Got them on jigs and a whopper plopper.

Nice,   I'm headed there on Wed.  What gate did you fish out of?  Looks like you rented a boat, where others launching their own boats without trouble?  Fished out of 43 last wk and had to launch at the last ramp down.

I rented a boat from the eastern gate and hit up the Pottapaug pond.  Seems like the jig bite is hot around wood - good luck!

Oh man, I was out on a small lake today. I can't even imagine the wind/waves on the Quabbin.

Haha it was so cold I couldn't tie on any new baits cause my fingers wouldn't cooperate.  That and I sit in the back of the boat and turn the engine to reverse to act like a trolling motor so I had waves slapping into the stern and splashing me.  If I hadn't caught fish it would have been terrible.

We got up around 6 and were going to go out but it was so cold we decided not to. Around noon we changed our minds and headed out, we got a few 3lbers so it was worth it, but like you said, I was banking on the wind to help out the bite, if it had been the other way around it would have been terrible.

I went Saturday and there was basically no wind.  I killed em on the senko.  I've found that I don't really catch anything good on senkos when the wind gets going, but that when it's calm they just bite like crazy.  Have you experienced anything like this?

I have issues fishing weightless senkos in the wind. When it's windy the line bows and if it's bad enough that will actually pull the senko along which impedes it from falling straight. When it's calm I can cast them accurately, see what the line is doing, and the senko falls perfectly. So for me at least it's just that I can't effectively fish them in the wind as well, I'm sure they still work well if you can present them effectively in the wind. T-rigging or using a wacky jig might help out the cause. Usually in the wind I like to fish moving lures like spinnerbaits or cranks though, and if I need to slow down usually go to a jig.

what is the cost to rent a boat there?

46 dollars for parking and full day boat rentals.  Closes on Saturday though.

i was wondering where you found all of those largemouth until I saw you fished the pond haha...

@Gilgamesh what does that transducer/fish finder mount look like??  I'm looking for a new way to mount my transducer on rentals at the Quabbin... Suction cup that I'm using now is just to finicky and seems to always stop working at the worst times...

I really want to buy a trolling motor to use there and just mount the transducer on that, but obviously that's an added expensive of a trolling motor too :)

This thing is money.  Totally worth the buy.  http://www.cabelas.com/product/Portable-Transducer-Bracket/699847.uts?productVariantId=1183043&WT.tsrc=PPC&WT.mc_id=GoogleProductAds&WT.z_mc_id1=01781000&rid=20&gclid=Cj0KEQjwvve_BRDmg9Kt9ufO15EBEiQAKoc6qsKk0ZCqaHspcGQqOI9RmrGYZKqKzkzQLFacW4jrS8saAnIS8P8HAQ&gclsrc=aw.ds

And yeah I give up on smallmouth once they go deep and just go to the pond in hopes of a big largie

Haha meet me at the quabbin some time and show me how to hit them.  I'm from northern California I've never had to hit 15+ before

Je1946 and myself fished Quabbin yesterday. We were met with bluebird skies, and light winds in the Am. John hooked up quickly with a nice estimated 3 lbr, and me soon after with my only fish for the day, I estimate about 2 lbs. We thought it was going to be a good day after that, but it was tough As the day wore on the wind kicked up and we figured we should be hooking up, but alas,  we struggled for a while till about 3 oclock when John hooked up with a few more,.. but these were better fish,.. we weighed one and it was 3lbs 12 ozs, and two more we didnt weight but they were respectable 4's anyways.

John definately kicked my butt yesterday, kudos to you John.

I may be well versed and schooled in bass fishing but he sure showed me up,..lol

I have to remember how to load pics here, will try in a few

Thanks for an enjoyable day Keith.  I never look at as anyone out fishing anyone else, I was just luckier.  lol.   A day on the Q with the beautiful fall foliage, gd company and a few fish to boot, what more could we ask for.  Fri doesn't look like it's going to happen, for me, so, i guess it's good bye to the Quabbin until spring.  God willing.    We still have plenty of fishing left as long as the weather holds, so It' s going to be in your rig.  I'll be in touch.   Thanks again.

No No thank you John,... I finally got a smallie, and from Quabbin no less, looking forward to hearing from ya.
