Replacing treble hooks

Recommended Posts

Howdy Folks,

This Winters project is to swap out all my crankbait trembles.

Is there a consensus on the best manufacturer and type?

Thanks in advance,

Al

I prefer Mustad KVD Ultra Point 2x short shank for most crankbaits. The short shank will often allow you to put a size bigger on the bait without the hooks fouling each other. Gamakatsu hooks are about as good as it gets in just about every hook they make as well.  I prefer a round bend Gamakatsu on jerkbaits, topwater and rattletrap type baits.

I find myself using Gamakatsu, owner, mustad. Depending on which ones are in stock, I'm not a fan of vmc hooks, only ones I don't buy

I use Owner ST 36s primarily, but I'm also a fan of the Eagle Claw short shank EWG trebles that Wal-Mart carries, the Fletcher Shryock signature series I think. I did find a great deal on some Mustad KVD EWG short shanks this past winter and bought a couple hundred of them for very cheap and they've been good.

Mustad KVD Triple Grip 2x Short for crankbaits since the short stem lets you go up one hook size without worrying about the hooks fouling up.

Are hooks like a kvd ultrapoint 2x short 1x strong geared more toward crankbaits spacifically?  (I figured the hook is more like an ewg than round bend). I have been using them on jerkbaits, caught fish on em, but lost some too?  It seemed like if the fish actually ate it good, it was stuck like a stuck pig, but if it swiped at the bait or barely nipped it, the hooks did not grab good enough to be able to land the fish.  What hook would most recommend for jerkbaits?  Would some do a round bend in he front and ewg in back?  Replaced hooks with same size also btw.  Sorry to thread jack, but thought it goes hand in hand with title.  Thanks

I use owner ST-36 for smaller baits, the owner ST-41 for larger baits, and for short/really small baits the mustad KVD Elites are good.

I use most of the trebles mentioned, depending on the specific lure and whether I want to upsize the hooks but don't want them to foul on each other.  I don't use KVD short shank hooks on top waters or jerkbaits because they don't hook well if a fish just slaps at the bait.  Round bend Gamakatsu or Owners are better for those.  JMHO, Japanese brands tend to have harder tempering and they stay sharper longer than VMC's or the cheaper Mustad models.  Because of wide availability, I use more Gamakatsu than any other brand.  They now make short shank trebles too but theirs are not as short as the KVD Mustads, so are less useful when upsizing.
