Drop shot fishing

Featured Replies

Can you guys tell me how to drop shot fish.  Thanks

My rig is fairly simple, if you know how to tie a palomar knot. Tie it so the tag end is as long as you want the weight to be under the bait. I usually do 12-14 inches. Tie on your hook of choice, with the palomar. then the tag end tie on your weight, any kind of barrel or spit shot will work. Split shots are nice in rocks because if the get hung up you can pull on your line and usually they slip off. Lastly finish it off with your choice of soft plastic, i usually use a fluke.

So how do you fish this setup.  I just bought drop shot hooks.  How to rig.

I use it along ledges, Submerged trees, Rock piles, or if fish are suspended under baitfish.

I didn't read that article, but I don't like the diagram. it shows the hook facing down. that is just begging to miss a ton of fish. My method in a nutshell.

Tie a palomar knot. I always put the loop in from the point towards the shank when I tie it. Then pass the tag end of 4"-24" back through the eye again from the point towards the shank and pull tight. This will keep the hook always pointed up. I use owner mosquitos in size 1 and 1/0. Use a badukan weight or a bull shot at the desired distance from hook.

I use a bunch of baits but any naturally colored worm in the 3.5-6inch range is pretty typical. A natural color is typically some shade or combination of green, brown, or white/silver. If the fish are on shad, go with the white/silver. I use these colors because I typically drop shot in very clear water when the bite is tough. Others can work and can sometimes work better.

Allow rig to reach bottom and pull the line tight. You want the weight on the bottom and the bait suspended above it. Keeping the line taught, shake your rod tip for a few seconds then let it sit still on a tight line. If no bite, lift your rod and move the rig a few feet and repeat.

When you get bit, just start reeling and give the rod a smooth lift. There is no need to cross their eyes. Hook up percentages for me are well over 90% like this.

Have fun, dropshotting is a blast.

This is all you need to know about drop-shotting.

Just be forewarned that nose-hooking and brushpiles do not mix.  :)
