The instructions that came with my new Citica recommends putting drop of oil on brake pipe as part of regular maintenance. Is that step something unique to Shimano brakes?

No, any reel with a centrifugal braking system will benefit from a light thin film of oil on the "drum" to prevent excess friction and wear on the little plastic brake blocks.............the key is LIGHT.  Over the course of a fishing season I would do it once or twice per season.....or as soon as I notice excess braking force. For example, with 3 brakes on, and 3 off....If I have to back one off to get the same casting distance with the same lure, I know it's time to rub a drop of oil on the brake drum, and maybe give the spool bearings a drop as well.

The new braking system for the Citicas and Curados calls for a little oil on the brake pipe primarily to keep the reel from making a screeching sound during the cast, from what I know.

Thank you.  Will follow your advice.

Keeping the drum/ cone clean helps too.
