ordering spools from shimano

Featured Replies

Hello,

I spoke with two different people at Shimano USA and they werent sure if the spool assembly comes with brake shoes. I'd go ahead and just buy the brake shoes just in case but I want to order 5 spools and that could be a lot of shoes i dont need.

When you ordered your spool did you have to also order the brake shoes?

Thanks!

I just noticed that some of the diagrams show separate part numbers for the shoes and some don't.

The ones that have separate part numbers for shoes are the Met13 and Aldebaran. Has anyone ordered spools for those?

Regardless, they'll send you brakes for free. I've called a couple times to pay for replacement brakes and have received them free of charge both times.

Wonder how many calls they get on this question? I am glad you made this post as I had called them two weeks ago and asked the very same question but for a spool for a core 50. The guy I spoke to didn't know so he had checked with some of the others and they finally came to the conclusion that they spools do come with the brakes on them. He said they list a separate number for the brakes in case people just need to order the brakes alone.

Having said all that, I am not sure how accurate the info is as I asked how the weather was in Cali (I had assumed he was in California) and he said he didn't know as he was in the GLoomis factory in Woodland, Washington.

just to clarify in case someone is confused, the spools come with brakes. we are trying to figure out if they come with the brake shoes.

i ended up ordering the spools and ordered extra brake shoes for the Aldebaran and MET13. The other spools i ordered did not have separate part numbers for the brake shoes.

I will post back here when i rcv the spools to let you know if they indeed came with the shoes. Both reps i spoke with came to the conclusion that they probably did not have the shoes, I think they do. Worse case scenario - i wasted 10 bucks.

When a part is shown as "ASSEMBLY", it means that the part comes complete. At least that has always been my experience with Shimano.

They come with the shoes.

yep but that could also mean the spool plus brakes (not shoes). another thing the reps and i discussed.

thanks, J Francho. I had a feeling they did. glad i didn't order them for all five spools!

Great to get a confirmation!!

I'm 99% certain you'll get the shoes.  I know when I ordered a spool for a Curado E, it came as one whole unit.

yeah, im pretty sure you and Zimbobass are right. just looked at the Curado E and the shoes also have their own part number for that reel.

i didnt want to take the chance of having to wait for the shoes to get mailed separately. it came out to about 7 bucks for 6 shoes for the Met13 and 4 for the Aldebaran. If i wasnt so impatient and ordered today, i would have skipped the shoes.

Now my only worry is that the 2 Curado 70 spools I ordered wont fit my Scorpions! Ive been told they will though.

What i thought was interesting is that the Aldebaran spool is more than twice the price of the Met13 spool and $45 more than the MetMGL spool.

The Aldebaran and Met 13 spools did NOT come with brake shoes. These had brake shoes in the parts diagram.

The Met MGL and Curado 70 spools did come with brake shoes. These did not have brake shoes in the parts diagram.

FYI for those of you ordering Met MGL spools - you need to also order part BNT 5218 which is the small O-ring in the diagram below right next to the spool assembly.

Cripes.....

makes a little sense for the spools that have two different shoe options - but the ones that dont?

Sorry to hear that it didn't come with shoes.

I am about to order a couple Core 50 spools to swap in and out of my Curado 50E's. I have quite a few of the red and green brakes so I think I will order the clear smoke ones for the Calais as they are the thinner ones used on the bfs spools.

So, did we establish a correlation between having part numbers for the shoes in the schematic, or not and the spool coming with shoes or not?

  • Author

with my 4 different spools there seems to be. The Curado E has part numbers for shoes but its for a 300 size. maybe your case was different because it was another size?

Mumbly, let us know if the Core spool comes with brake shoes if you don't mind. The shoes have part numbers in the diagram.

I will definitely let you know.
