In the past I have used Zuddler minnows for largies and rabbit buggers for smallies on the fly rod. I recently tied the tube fly below that with its ridiculous action got me in the mode I want to toss these on a spinning rod. This definately wouldn't be something I would toss a mile, but I think we could get them pitched out far enough. Flies like the Zuddler, clouser, and this tube fly should be heavy enough to toss. Unfortunately the bugger would probably be too light. 

 

Why not not use a fly rod you ask? With a 16 foot boat and 2 people, the fly cast just is too clunky. Why flies? They are a super finesse presentation and would be great post cold front. What do you all think?

They are a pain to cast and put a hinge point in the line screwing with the drop angle. I generally fish them on a sink tip line not a floating line on the fly rod on lakes. For flies like the Zuddler I want it to drop horizontally. 

I actually tie a jig I call a "pseudo tube" that works really well and I tie it on a 1/6oz or 3/32oz head as it is an ultra finesse presentation.

Definately going to try it, just stuck waiting till May. Just stuck in my dream up crazy stuff to try mode to keep my fishing mind sharp. This gets more difficult every year;)

Oh yeah, those are more like micro jigs than flies, but by whatever name, they will catch. I would go with an ultralight spinning outfit and braid with a mono (I don't use flouro) leader. Nice.

Great lakes guys fish 1/16-3/32 oz hair jigs all the time.  You can get good distance with a 7+ foot ML rod, and a 2500-size spinning reel with light (less than 6 lb) braid.  The ML Daiwa Steez rods are the best thing I've found for throwing light lures.  Smaller reels translate to less casting distance, so I'd wouldn't use anything smaller than a 2500.
