Hello all,

It's been a long time since I went for fishing. Yesterday I was about to go for fishing, but I noticed that the fish hooks were rusty. I tried removing the rust off the hook, but it was very difficult. Most of my hooks seem to be rusty. My brother told me not to use them as they may not be safe to use. I was thinking of disposing them, but is disposing the rusty fish hooks in garbage containers recommendable?? Then I thought of collecting the rusty fish hooks and handing them over to waste disposal companies. Does anyone here have any other suggestion?? Do you know any tips to clean the rust off the hooks?? I tried cleaning them with soap water, but it was of no use. If you know any tips or have any suggestions please let me know. Thank you in advance. 

Using rusty hooks is a bad idea, and unless it's very mild and doesn't rinse off with WD40, you'll waste your time trying to clean them.  Upgrade your hooks - that's rarely a bad idea.

I agree, it's a waste of time trying to clean them, it would be quicker and easier just to replace them. And as mentioned in the above link, putting them in a sturdy bottle and tossing it out is a decent way to get rid of them.

I usually will get out the pliers and break the hooks up. Putting them in a bottle or container is good way to get rid of them.

Cut 'em off and toss 'em. Dispose of how you

see fit, or in accordance with any local regs in

your community.

 

Then put some shiny new trebles on there and

go catch some chunky hawgs!

 

I used to fish with Rusty Fishhooks, but haven't seen him in years   

Rust means the metal has been compromised so it's a weaker/duller hook.  Also you don't want to stick yourself with a rusty hook.  When getting rid of hooks I'll usually push them into a piece of cardboard or styrofoam.
