Fluorocarbon not breaking at the knot

Featured Replies

I used fluorocarbon (15 lb. Seaguar Invizx) for the first time today and both times when my jig got snagged and I went to break it off, it broke where I had it wrapped around my sleeve instead of at the knot like I'm used to. If I continue to lose line at that rate, I'll have to respool every other trip. Is there a trick to getting it to break off at the knot?

Welcome aboard!

Assume you're talking the terminal knot (hook)?

Possible the line is abraded/weak due to various

issues (snags, structure, etc.)?

After an "issue" where the line rubs a dock pylon,

downed tree, bridge, rocks, do you rub your fingers

down the line to make sure it isn't nicked anywhere?

As well, since it's your first time using, can't dismiss

the possibility it's a bad spool...

Put thumb on spool and pull straight back

Spinning reel palm the spool and pull straight back.

I don't use fluoro for anything but had a friend who used it and it kept breaking in random spots

Do not do this. You may warp/damage your spool if your line is heavy enough. Always wrap it around something else, a stick, your pliers, whatever, and pull with it instead. This is especially risky with finesse or thin walled spools

I use Flouro line a lot..Used Invisex but now nothing but Sniper.

Point is no matter what line you're useing always check for nicks, scrapes or any other imperfections.

I have a habit of re tying my knot after every 3rd or 4th fish and the night before any outing regardless if I used that set up previously or not. While doing that, as Darren. said, I'll run a rods length of line through my fingers and cut off as much as I think I should.

Is it necessary?.... No probably not.

Do I go through more line than maybe I should?...Probably

But The advantages of useing quality Flouro line to me vastly out weighs this one negative.

But to me it's worth the alternative..

I guess I won't give up on fluorocarbon yet. I've even used Invizx 8 lb. as a leader before, and it almost always broke at the knot for me. It just struck me as weird. The line shouldn't have had any abrasions at the point where it broke, because it was new line and that portion of the line hadn't even been much below the surface of the water. It did take a hell of a lot of force to break it, so I'm not worried that it could have cost me a fish.

Sounds like the FC and knots (line to FC and FC to lure) are stronger than the braid.  Either the braid is too weak (damage, too low pound test, very old/deteriorated) or the leader is too strong.  If the braid is OK, go to a lower pound test FC.  If the braid is not OK, replace it, possibly to a higher pound test.

Your knots are good, so don't change them unless you start getting breaks at the line to FC knot. l If you get that, improve your line to FC knot by using a double uni, FG, or Alberto (it has to be tied right!  tag end of braid has to go out the loop correctly, check the illustrations on line).

Finally, if all is OK and you're still not breaking at the lure, use a slightly weaker knot there.

One thing that I have noticed about Flouro is that it hates to be wrapped around itself.  That's why you see things like "precision wound" on spools of higher end stuff.  It's also why the best knots for it don't really wrap around so that under tension the line is pulled over another part (San Diego Jam and Palomar, even making the flouro the "U" part of an Alberto knot).  SO that all being said I think you might have had an issue with how it was spooled up (tension on line not being consistent, so some of the line had line under much higher tension laid over it).  OR you had a bad spool.   Strip off some and check to see if it's still round and not squished or marfed up.

He was using straight FC.

Oops!

Then he has something sharp on his sleeve.  Sorry.
