Tightening drag?

Featured Replies

I've noticed that my Lew's Tournament MB has a rather wobbly handle and recently tightened my drag all the way down and it seems much better. What I was wondering is if this is bad for my reel to tighten it down so hard and if I should loosen it after use. I really have no use for the drag really because I use 30 lb. braid and prefer rock solid hooksets with jigs.

What you're seeing is likely just an optical illusion caused by slightly out of square machining of the drag star. The drag can protect more than the line. I'm not an advocate of running them on lock down but if you must, loosen it when done for the day.

The drag is there for a reason. Allot of reels will feel sloppy, untill you set your drag. A properly set drag, may save you a fish of a lifetime. My drags are never set as tight as can be. If i need alittle more my thumb can handle that. Also if the reel is stored, back the drag all the way off :)

i pretty much never lock down my drag unless i'm snagged and need to break off.

i run it pretty tight when i can especially around thick cover,

Ok, but I can feel the whole handle wiggle back and forth when it is loose but I can run it a little lower and deal with it probably

That's kinda weird, my lfs doesn't have any play in it with the drag backed all the way off. I wonder if the nut is loose under the cap on your handle?

Just my .02, may be the handle nut got loose on something. You can try to tighten it a little and see if it help.
