Maryland Snakehead Derby

Featured Replies

Those Northern Snakeheads are going to establish themselves in Upper Potomac River after a few spring floods. I do wonder how well they will do in that environment. Hopefully they will not have much of an impact on the smallmouth bass fishery.

Debatable how much impact they have had on the lower Potomac.

Agreed, but they have to make it dramatic to sell the event LOL

I just find it interesting the Blue and Flathead catfish are also invasive on the lower Potomac but do not get a second thought by anyone.

Yes, but they aren't as scary as the "SNAKEHEAD" "FRANKENFISH" lol

I am actually pretty excited that there are snakeheads in that part of the canal, I fish there as often as I can and would love to catch one.  My fear is that someone at NPS gets the idea to fully drain the canal to kill them all off.  They already let it get so low it is a wonder any of the bass survive.

Speaking of the canal, has anyone been to canal at Dickerson lately?  When I was there early December, it was down to about a foot of water.  I think the spill related to the power plant there either cut off the water supply or drained the section.

Would hate to lose another section of Canal with fish.

They do seem to draw down most of the other watered sections in the winter, hopefully it is going to be refilled soon.

That area is usually not that low even in winter, used to be a good area for me anytime it was not solid. Haven't been there in a couple years though. Most likely a draw down to work on the lock.
