I have a new Stradic ci4 1000 coming and my guestion is. I want to try braid for the first time on this reel. Because of the small diameter of the spool, how do you attach the braid to the spool? Line backing, tape, straight tie, ??????.

You can cut a tiny piece of tape and affix it to the 

spool if you want to tie direct braid.

 

Or spool on a few yards of 4# test then tie that.

 

On my Stradic 1000s I tie direct at this stage, using

either the tape or direct method.

Please do use a few yards of Mono or FC as backing - then spool it up.

Ok when using electrical tape - do you just tape it around the spool then tie your braid around it like normal, or do you tie your braid around the spool and use the tape to actually tape down the knot end of the braid to the spool?  I thought the tape would provide the friction needed to hold the braid in place and when I spooled it up I got freespooling and had to remove all the braid and start over again (with mono backing as normal).

Can run one ring around entire spool, or cut off a piece 

the height of the spool. I have no tape on a couple reels

and to wind it I had to start slowly then increase speed

once it took.

 

Using a few yards of mono is probably best, but the 

electrical tape should work just fine. There are spools 

that have some foam or rubber on them for this very

purpose - no backing needed.

 

If you want to save small change, use backing from an old monofilament supply spool.

But if you want to eliminate the pesky connection knot and have braid all the way,

a few wraps of electrical tape around the spool-arbor and you're good to go.

One thing I've done that's worked is after tying the braid, using those little sticky tabs that PowerPro includes with their line - I'll use three of those and fasten down the line from the arbor loop to the spool, seems to do the trick.

I have this reel and use a couple turns of 6# mono then tie on 10# braid. 

I use this stuff called "friction tape", it has a tar-like coating on it.  I have found it in the electrical section of hardware stores.  The braid digs in and does not move.
