Just picked up an Okuma TCS rod and the guides are pretty small.  I planned on using braid w/fluorocarbon leader (bait caster) but have concerns about the alberto knot passing through the guides.  What are your thoughts on this?  I've tried straight fluoro on a spinning reel and was disappointed with the line memory.  If I have to use it on the casting reel I'm hoping it will behave better.  

The alberto will pass better than the Uni to uni but not as good as the FG.

I usually only for through the guides with spinning gear or leader that will be used for 1 say only

Simple answer: don't use leaders.

 

I never used them, and never will.  Another knot is just another weak spot that can fail. 

 

As for FC memory - I've never had that issue with Tatsu or Fluoro Finesse line.  I think Seaguar figured out a way to eliminate that problem.  And why not? After all, they're the ones that invented fluorocarbon fishing line.

The Alberto will go through those just fine, they are not true "micro" guides.  Phenix uses a similar guide on their rods and I have no issues.

The fc tag end always catches for me...no matter how close i try to cut it.  Spinning gear is no issue though.

I have a couple TCS rods, and I either use straight fluoro or straight braid.  I have tested both with an Alberto knot with 65# braid and a 15# leader.  The knots pass fine.  I would call the guides "mini" not "micro."  When deciding to use a leader, you have to ask why.  Then decide whether or not the trade off is worth it.

I'm considering a leader because I like braid but fish pretty clear waters and would like a couple of feet of clear line between the braid and the lure.  Also, the leader acts like a fusible link that I can break off if I get hopelessly hung up.  Harder to do with braid.

I'd be looking at a straight tough co-polymer line or fluoro.  It would depend on what and where you're throwing it, and what you're throwing.  I don't have an issue with clear water and tying direct to braid in weeds.  I use a leader as a last resort.  I don't subscribe to the more knots = weaker setup.  my rigs for salmon and steelhead have up to six knots.  The fish weight to line break strength ratio is much higher, and knot issues would shake out pretty quick.

 

Anyway, might help if you describe what you want to throw, where, and what the rating is.
