Hello. I am looking into starting to throw smaller swimbaits around the 1 - 2oz range, the Daddy Mac Viper Sunfish (1.3oz) and Sebile Magic Swimmer (1.5oz) are two examples. My problem is I got a Kastking Royale Legend baitcaster, but I don't think it can hold up to these baits in the 2oz range. Anyone have a recommendation for someone who knows very little about swimbait reels? Any suggestions are very much appreciated. - Davis M

I don't think those baits are going to hurt a regular sized reel. 

You're reel will be fine.  There's no such thing as a "swimbait reel."  Many use larger, round, metal framed reels for their greater line capacity.

Agreed with the previous comments. Any basic reel should do it. What I would be asking myself though is: will I be throwing even bigger baits in the not so far future?

If there is a chance for a yes, I would look into bigger reels at the 300 size. Also, do you want to use it for bass only, or is there a chance that something bigger might bite. If yes, consider the drag to be more important. And last: do you want to use it for freshwater only or also for saltwater applications? If yes, get a inshore version. 

In regards to reels I would suggest something like a Daiwa Lexa 300. Solid reel that you can get for less than 150 USD. 

 

I would recommend a daiwa zillion coastal.  Besides it looks sssssoooooooo nice with the blue instead of every other reel that is black and red.

I have the reel I can second this suggestion! Looks nice, casts nice and you do not brake the bank

You're probably not going to see a mod to say a bad thing about Kastking.  Kastking or not, I'd go with an aluminum frame reel with good fit tolerance and brass gears for long term cranking with swimbaits. Just my 2 cents.

I use the Daiwa Tatula HD for most of my swimbaits, Almost everything I throw is under 3 OZ.  Mainly because it is about the same size as anything else but with a little more line capacity.
