Hey guys, first of all I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Tobi and I am 27 years old. I am from Germany and i love Bassfishing.
I hope you can help me with my decision. Im interested in a G.Loomis GLX 803 3/16 - 5/8 oz.

I need this rod for Jigs from 5/16 to 5/8oz + maximum 4inch trailer but most time im between 5/16 and 1/2oz.

Can you tell me what weight is the maximum to jig with this rod? In Germany people say the weight indication is underrated but I cant find much about the GLX Series here. Do you think the rod is overloaded with 5/8oz+small Trailer

I don’t know if I should take the 804 but I don’t like fishing with overrated rods.

I hope you can undersand what I mean. I had my last English lesson 10 years ago .

 

The GLX can comfortably throw weights 1/4 ounce above the rating.

I have a few and always reach for the lower rated one.

while a trailer does add weight to the lure, I always go by the lure weight.

the old classic BCR 803 GLX maxes out at 3/8oz jigs plus a trailer in my opinion. i would not like to throw 1/2oz jigs on that rod. you can do it, it wont break the rod, but far from ideal.

 

not sure about the new GLX version. PM me if you would like some additional resources for looking into the rod.

 

remember, that trailer adds considerable weight to the jig.

I would take the 804 if you are using both 3/8 and 1/2 oz jigs. In the NRX line that would the 873 CRR.

I use 90% 5/16 - 7/16 Jigheads

Only in the winter i use sometimes 3/4oz Jigheads

I want a good feedback with light jigs too.

How many oz i need to have a good feeling what my Lure is doing on the ground?

Is there a difference between 803 and 804?

So to be clear you are looking at the new 2016 GLX rods with carbon fiber insert by the but cap and with the grey blanks with blue trim correct?

 

The 803 is rated from 3/16 - 5/8 and the 804 is rated from 5/16 to 3/4.

 

You mention the lightest you throw is 5/16. This is where the 804 starts and where likely nearing the sweet spot for 803. Move up to 7/16 and you are nearing the top end of the 803 and still in the sweet spot for the 804. Move up to 3/4 oz and you have exceeded the lure rating of the 803 while still being at the top end of the 804. Add the weight of the plastics you are using and I just don't see why the 803 would be considered for everything you mentioned.

 

If you want my pick I would get the MBR 844 GLX. This rod would handle everything you are wanting and when you go to use something 3/4 oz with plastic you will be likely at or just a tick over the max lure weight rating while the 803 and 804 will have exceeded with just the weight of the lead.

 

The other difference is in the action. Fast for the 804 and 844 MBR while the 803 is XF.

 

As far as how much weight someone would need to be able to detect a bite I would say that some folks fish weightless plastics...hook plus plastic only like a senko or fluke for example and detecting the bite is easy. Basically the rod will just load and there will be weight there or maybe you will feel a thunk or two. As far as feeling what is going on the bottom you should be fine with anything over 1/4 oz as a general rule of thumb. The heavier the weight the better it should transmit what is going on the other end however two issues. 1st is heavier weights are easier to snag. 2nd the action of the bait is far less natural on the fall.

When you say 7/16 is the top of the end, does it means 7/16 jighead only or 7/16+Trailer?

I just ordered the G.Loomis 804 GLX. I hope it was a good decision

The Blank is only "fast" i hope that´ok.

The guy where i ordered it told me there should be no difference respective the Feedback of a 5/16 Jighead. 803 is similar to 804 it´s just have more power.

I think you chose wisely.

From the link and photos it appears to he the older classic GLX rods with the recoil guides. Nice rods, and I think you will be happy with the 804.
