Was looking at the 7'3 MH Moderate action Fenwick Lunker Stik for a cranbait rod.

 

Would I be better off with a medium moderate action rod?

 

mostly throwing 3/8 oz crankbait and up..

I would go with a MH for 3/8 oz and up. A Medium would be good for light jerk baits, topwater, and other treble hook baits. Fenwick makes some nice rods, good luck with the purchase. I suggest 12 lb mono or fluoro.

Ya I think I'm gonna get it. The finish is super nice and at $110, seems like a great price.

 

can I use this rod for top water and other treble hooks even tho it's 7,3 MH? Thanks

The 7'3" MH would be good for trebles because of the moderate action, plays the fish better and I prefer a moderate/moderate fast action for fishing spooks, poppers and such. Not so sure about frogs, I would use a faster tip for a better hook set.

Right, that makes more sense.

I'd also go MH in your situation.

For medium to deep diving baits, I'd also suggest the MH.  Throwing anything running 8' or more on a Med weight stick gets rough fast. 

They are actually nice rods for the price. The MH is the rod you want as others have said, and while you can use it for treble hook topwaters I don't think it would be ideal. you could fish a wake bait or popper but something like a spook or other walking bait would be hard. They are glass rods and the rod you are looking at is a moderate which even in the MH will have a tip section that will be a little softer than what you want to get a consistent cadence, now it can be done but will take time learning to adjust for the tip recovery. They do make a 6'8" MH with a mod-fast action that is made for square bills and topwaters but for cranks diving deeper than 6' or so I'd opt for the 7'3" MH.

So the lower the action on the rod slows down the "shake"?

These are broad statements. M , MH ... are all subjective and vary brand to brand and even models within brands. Just make sure the weight of the bait falls well within the listed range then check for backbone to move fish and counter resistance of bait on retrieve

@Delaware Valley Tackle and @smalljaw67 more or less explained it.  

 

Even if you were just throwing crankbaits, you want a rod rated for the weight and with enough backbone to allow you to turn fish and to feel comfortable cranking the deeper running baits, but also a slow enough tip flex to launch your bait a mile and keep fish pinned on treble hooks. 

 

Also, each company's weight and action ratings can be pretty different from the next.

So would a MH fast with a crankbait make your rod wobble more than a MH moderate action?

I have several MH and got a medium for squarebills and small cranks.  I am really happy with the medium and prefer it over the MH.  I think each brand differs though.

A slower action (mod or mod/f) helps keep them pinned when they jump.
