Rod taper for swimbaits?

Featured Replies

I've been wondering what taper I should have for swimbaits. Should it be more parabolic or a faster taper? Trying to get into swimbaits but having trouble figuring out what rod to get and reel and line. Baits are also up in the air not sure which ones to get. Any help would be awesome.

Thanks!

It will depend what type of baits you want to be throwing. If you are primarily tossing hudds and other similar soft plastic baits  I'd say a faster will be better. But that same fast taper may not be as great for treble hook baits like glide baits or wakebaits. That being said people fish hudds on the popular dobyns champion series which from what I've heard is VERY parabolic. So some of it comes down to personal preference as well. You might just have to alter your hookset to match the rod and bait.

As for baits, I'd probably say an S-waver (168 or 200....or both), an MS Slammer, and some hudds, and maybe some 3:16 weedless rising sons will get you started and allow you to cover the whole water column pretty well. There are a lot of great companies out there and some great custom makers, and not all of them charge super high prices.

I do fine with Heavy/Fast or Heavy/Mod-Fast.  It's more important to check the lure weight ratings, to me.

I'm not sure how much help this will be, but from what I've seen, I'd be happy with:

Fury 806SB

Lew's BB1 Pro (especially now they are releasing a new one)

P-Line CXX 20-25lb

To answer your specific question, generally heard fast action, but I think swimbaits are like spinnerbaits, it's either fast or mod-fast depending on who you ask.

I definitely prefer a parabolic action for treble hook swimbaits. But on baits where I have to drive home the hook at a distance, I want the tip to be able to handle it. Sunline Shooter Defier Armilo in 22lb on a Lews Speed Round reel - a bargain for the price.

Swimbaits range from small 1/4 oz  to over 7 oz big swimbaits. Any swimbait under 1 oz can be fished with standard MH-fast bass tackle, over 3 oz you need a specific swimbait rod.

So far I like it. I've only caught two fish on it and they were both less than two pounds but it has enough backbone to set the hook on a savage gear 3D trout (5" model) and it is parabolic enough to still use baits like the river 2 sea swaver (120) those are the only two baits I have caught fish on so far. The taper is considered fast but seems to be more of a mf to me. Overall I'm happy with the purchase
