Baitcaster pairing advice with St. Croix legend glass rod

Featured Replies

So I pulled he trigger on a backordered St. Croix legend glass rod today.  The 7'2" medium.  I'm really excited to get back to glass since I really haven't used the stuff since I was a kid. I have been using the avid x mh moderate for all my cranking to this point and decided it's really more suited for all my lipless (usually 1/2 ounce) and medium divers since I have it paired with a lews bb1 pro.  My question is this, what reel would you guys pair up with it that comes with a low gear ratio for casting the lighter stuff.  I find even the 3/8 bandit are more work than I'd like to do on the lews reel.  I know I might get a lot of 200e5 shimano answers but trying to get all my options in front of me and start narrowing it down.

Check eBay and try and find yourself one of the varieties of the Daiwa Millionaire CV-Z or CV-X 103.  That would be an awesome reel for that rod.  Or get a Calcutta TE or Conquest.

That's kind of an interesting idea.  I typically only look at low profile stuff but the style definitely fits the classic look of the legend glass.  One of the reasons I'm going back to glass on the rod is to get that "feel" back.  Graphite is great to feel everything going on.  But I have been feeling nostalgic about cranking and especially because it used to be my confidence bait.  And maybe I lost some of that because graphite changed how I fished my cranks.  The rod only comes in at 5 ounces so I'm not worried about fatigue.  Thanks for the idea.

Sure thing!  A quality round reel on there would make it look even more "retro."  If I owned the rod, I might fish my custom Iovino 4600C (green with silver/gold accents and pearl knobs).  In honesty though, I bet that rod would look awesome with a CVZ/Luna 103 or 203 and I would more likely fish that.  But get the cork knobs, they would seal the deal!

Or you could go totally crazy and order a Monoblock or Lin in any one of the varieties!

Why not a alphas sv.  It has a low ipt and handles the lighter lures very well.

Monoblock and Lin would put me in the dog house for a lot longer than usual.  The little lady already loves seeing those rod shipping tubes showing up at our doorstep.  Lol

if I do stick to my low profile ways, I am at the very least already convinced that this rod deserves some sort of gold involved in the reel cosmetically.  I know this kind of talk is ridiculous in the grand scheme of looking for best application.  If nothing else my father will be grinning ilear to ear that I was able to get yesterday's look and feel in today's tech.

You are right on the money there.  I should have been more correct in my original question that it's a low ipt only reel for me in this situation.  I know plenty of guys that preach to just slow down reeling speed.  Just never felt the need with so many options today.

the millionare has a lot of cool variants and you can stay out of the big money of the LIN's and Mono's.  My favorite is the red gold RCS but the green gold is also very nice.  The pink ito is not my thing but some like them.  All half or less of the others and just as unique.  The last reel if your into round that might be worth a check is a luna.  My 253 is my main SB reel but the 103 is getting a lot of mod attention.
