Wakebait bill repair

Featured Replies

An unfortunate first post here. I've been a lurker for the better part of the past year. So long story short, hit a rock with my savage gear 3d rat and broke the bill.

As you can see, a good portion of the lip is missing and there's a crack that runs down the center of the bill. I'd like to repair the lure so I can get some more useful life out of it. Would I be able to grind out the fracture and epoxy some shaped plastic to the lure or would I need to remove the lip entirely and replace it with a new one? Thank you in advance for your guidance.

well most lures are made with acrylic lips and there is a glue i used to make aquariums with that works very well on it.  Its called weldon from IPS.  it will suck into the crack and melt it back together and you can glue on a new piece also and then file it back to shape.  Dont know what tools or other things you have around the garage but its an option.  This glue is used in tanks i have seen to 500 gallons and they do larger tanks i havent seen with it.  The value of the lure and if its worth repair is up to you.

Might try contacting Savage Gear and see what they suggest.

I'm glad to hear that I don't necessarily need to drill the entire thing out. I will grab some proper glue and will check the weldon as well as epoxy options. What kind of acrylic is recommended for the repair?

I sent them an email a few weeks ago, but never heard back.

The 16 is thick and works well as a filler.  The #4 is thinner than water and will draw into cracks and makes a much stronger bond.  Acrylic is all about the same with many brand names to include Plexiglas.  poly-carbonate is different but the same glue will work.  Finding the exact same thickness can be difficult and if depending where you live you can go to one of the shops and go threw their castoff bin.  I have been to the one in san diego and picked up a bunch of scrap for projects way cheaper than sheet costs.
