Anyone hit Lake Mooney yet?

Featured Replies

Lake Mooney in Fredericksburg, VA opened for fishing on the 1st of July after years of anticipation. Did anyone get out and fish it? VDGIF reports that the fish are already stunted but I was still thinking about heading down there soon to catch some numbers. From what I have heard it sounds like I can launch my bass boat as long as I keep the gas motor out of the water. I saw that the park opens at 8:00AM, are boats allowed to launch earlier than 8?

Going  this tues. but I don't think you can even have a gas motor on you boat  to fish there I will check tomprrow and try to get back on here  to let you  know.

I went out yesterday and caught a ton of dinks. Gas motors must be trimmed out of the water. That lake has the potential to be amazing but the bass are overpopulated right now.

Everything worked. Chatterbait, crankbait, drop shot, texas rig, carolina rig.... I had a 7" bass bite a 12" worm...

Went this past weekend and like the lake. Caught at least 30 bass, all around the 10-14" mark. Did find a 5 lb kicker, but the place is completely overpopulated with dinks. Make sure you have 4x4 drive if you are launching the boat. The ramp is shallow and the hill leading to it is steep with really loose gravel. The lake is extremely deep with tons of sticks and cover in the shallows.

The lake allows anglers to take up to 5 bass UNDER 12 inches and I encourage everyone to do that. The bass really need to be thinned out of this lake so that the forage can recover and new forage species stocked. It has the potential to be legendary but anglers need to do their part. I know catch and release is ingrained in all of us but if we want bigger bass at Mooney we have to remove the smaller ones.

Revisting this post.. I’ve fished Mooney three times so far this month since I got the boat... still all dink’s for me... I seen pics of some 4# bass but o haven’t hooked anything close yet...

what baits are you using?  I live in Holly Corner right around the corner from Mooney.  Only been once taking the grandson from the shoreline with no luck, but it looks like a good place to take the yak!

Right now Cranks like the Bandit or XD been the lure for me.. some wacky hits...

i live on Holly Corner as well.

Went yesterday again to Mooney. Nothing of size still biggest still a pound.

You in a boat? yak?  or shoreline?  where do you launch from?  I found a small launch spot at the end of W Rocky Run off holly corner road, but unsure if you are allowed to launch/park there.

I parked there when I took the grandson from shore and my truck was fine, but I was only there an hour or so.

In a boat. The ramp is on the other side of the lake... if know the shortcut from Geico to 95 than it’s easy to find the ramp. But you turn right between the Geico and Hiant, right at the animal hospital, straight at the all way stop signs, and you’ll see a very large rock and sign on RT he right..

I seen people parking and carrying their kayak over the ridge by the pull off on West Rocky Run lol. I’m sure we’re talking about the same spot??

cause it’s the only spot unless you park at the circle. I was told we’re not allow to park and fished at the circle but I have the past. Allot of people do too.

Here’s a pic of the ramp. It has a kayak launch too.

Been on there just once...first week in July, but I'll be revisiting.

I got a bunch of dinks, but I lost a couple decent ones.  One took off fast and broke off light line ned.  Was a flurry where it seemed every cast with a small crank got a bite.  Considering the time of year, I was happy with the first trip.
Looks to have a lot of potential.

yup that's the same spot lol.  i've been to the ramp as well, same day i took the grandson to the circle at the end of west rocky run.  the ramp was packed so i took my chances parking under the no parking sign!  still haven't made it on this lake yet though.  hoping to soon.  finally got the yak out yesterday afternoon.  went to Curtis for a couple hours before dark.  managed 1 small bass, 1 medium turtle (I don't understand?) and missed 3 other small bass.  not bad for my first time out on my yak in over a year, and how tuff Curtis historically is!

Revisiting an old thread again. Been out a handful of times since last post last year (almost to the day lol). Still average dinks, 1lb or under around 10-12in.  Last couple trips (last weekend and this past Tuesday night, 25 May) I've managed a few larger ones.  Around 14in or so and nice and plump so they are getting bigger and healthier!  Caught my personal best (out of Mooney that is) Tuesday as well....19in, 3lb 10oz!  I knew they were in there and like others have said, have heard of some larger ones but never caught anything close.  I almost strictly use 6in zoom lizards fishing the shoreline/laydowns.  I suppose if I crack open the tackle boxes and expand a bit I'd do better, but the lizard is tried and true for me!  lol. Tight lines!
