Help! Bass boat insurance

Featured Replies

A once in a lifetime opportunity has come along and I am curious about general monthly costs re: bass boat insurance.

Can someone throw out some numbers on what I might expect to pay on a 2002 Allison XB-2003 with a Merc 225 on it?

I have a 2004 Tr 21 XDC. I took delivery 2/15/06, new boat, 225 Opti, Triton tandem trailer.  Progressive price starting 2/28/07 $444.97 a year on agreed value of $45,500.00, Liability - $300,000, Fishing equipment - $5000,00, Personel equipment - $1000,00, Road Service.

Check with your home owners insurance company. I have mine covered under my home owners considerably under Progressive. You will want to check any restrictions with your home owners.

I checked around for insurance with my new boat.  State Farm was the priciest at $850 and had a $1,000 deductible.  Then there was a Farmers which quoted me $765 and same deductible.  Then I called 1800BASSBOAT.  They quoted me $670, included a $250 deductible and full replacement of the boat, $5,000 towards gear and full replacement on electronics and trolling motor.  I didn't bother calling Progressive but perhaps i should give them a shot too?

By the way this is for my 2007 Ranger Z22 with 300 Optimax.

I think you should start looking for an upgrade.

Seems like you got a good quote on your boat.  For a $55k+ bass boat, I'd think your premium would be around $1,500 per year.

Boy, call around.  Because of the Speed factor of that boat, the Allison will may be a totally different beast than others when it comes to premiums.

So I called Progressive today to get a quote from them.  By far, they were the most expensive at $1150!

Try 1800BASSBOAT.  Ask for Stan, tell him Robert Fernandez sent you

I have a 03 Ranger with a 200hp.My agent at Farm Bureau Insurance said it would be cheaper if i insured my Boat by peace.

So he asked me how much i wonted every thing covered for i told him.And it ended up being about 290 a year.

Motor:14,000

Boat:10,000

Trailer:2,000

Liability:300,000

Watch yourself when purchacing boat insurance as the terms they use can be deceiving and you don't want to end up owing money on a boat loan that is a total loss!!!!!

I can't remember all the terms of use. But I do know you should always go with "agreed value" If it's agreed value is say 40,000. You would get 40,000 in the unfortunate incident that your boat was deemed a total loss, this would be regardless of actual value. Replacement value DOES NOT mean you will get a new boat or money to pay for the new boat. It will either be based on blue book or regional value. You could in theroy (especially with todays extended boat loan terms) end up owing money for a boat you no longer have.

Just make sure you are covered. Ask questions and make sure your getting what you think! It's too late to find out when you need it!

There are two types of physical damage insuring agreements for pure risk losses to your watercraft.

The first is Actual Cash Value (ACV) and the second is Replacement Cost (RC).

ACV is exactly as you have on your personal vehicles.  Depreciation will be taken in consideration and the Blue Book value will guide the adjustor as to your recovery if your boat is damaged to the extent it is a total loss or a constructive total loss.

Replacement Cost will give you up to your delcared values should your boat be damaged or destroyed, less the deductible.

To reduce the premiums you can always assume more of the loss in the form of a higher deductible, let's say $1,000 or $1,500, etc.

The more exposure you transfer to the insurance company the higher is your premium.

As for third-party liability insurance, may I suggest at least $1,000,000?  The cost to upgrade from $300,000 or $500,000 to $1,000,000 is peanuts and the additional limits of liability can be 1) nice to have should you encounter an unfortunate event where you are negligent; and 2) it is good "sleep insurance" so you don't have to worry about an unfortunante event.

Make sure your Equipment and Accessories are also insured for their Replacement Cost value.

And always remember that even though you or someone else will complain about the premiums, it is almost impossible to pry that insurance contract out of a person's hands when there is an accident or a legal action against them.

Somethings you might want to look into are you covered for tournament fishing are you covered if you guide. If you take a buddy out is that guiding. Can you take it into salt water and how far. Can you travell with this coveage.
