Top Water Set Up Suggestions

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm currently doing some research on my next arsenal set up and I've chosen top water as the focal point. I'm still fairly new to the world of bass, I am mainly going to be using spook, popper and the occasional buzzer. I currently have a MGL XG 8:1:1 that I am thinking of pairing it with. I've decided on a medium rod, however I'm having trouble deciding Moderate or Fast Action.  Please share your input.

I was looking at these:

St.Croix Glass Legend - LGC610MM 6'10 Medium, Moderate action

or

G Loomis IMX 802C Top Water - 6'8 Medium, Fast action

Thanks

I've used the tw802 quite a bit and it's a great popper and walking bait rod. Also a fluke and jerkbait rod.

I like a longer and more powerful rod for a buzzbait.

One companies fast is another companies Mod, EFS, ect...

I would not use a moderate for top water, but that is me.

The baits you mentioned often hook themselves.....of the two you mentioned, GLX

I don't like to fish a buzzbait on the same rod I fish poppers, and spooks on. I like a buzzbait on a 7' Fast or even X-fast MH stick. I like something shorter with a little slower taper, and maybe a little less power, for poppers/walkers. If it has to one of those two for both applications, I'd go with the Loomis, a glass mod. tapered rod will never be much of a buzzbait rod.

For me, longer rods are a challenge to work walking baits like spooks, or poppers.  I like a medium action rod, but I don't want one over 6'. -  6'3" max.

This past year I've been using the 'new' Mojo Bass Topwater rod(MJC68XF) with #8 Yo-Zuri Hybrid and my hook-up and landing % has gone way up compared to a 7' Mod. fast rod.
