I've caught this several times out of a pond, and for the life of me just can't figure out what it is. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Yeah, blue tilapia. Hard to get to bite but they fight really well.

Heres the funny thing, I've caught one on a squarebil and my brother managed to catch one while fishing for panfish with homemade bait.

Not so hard in South Florida.  I used to catch them all the time in the palm beaches, little bread balls always got a bite.  Canal fish down there are absolutely voracious.
