Motor Question

Featured Replies

I just bought a new 15' fiberglass boat. Do you think I need to install a steering setup? Is this even possible? How do I know what kind of motor I would be looking for?

One thing I have seen is this idea for steering found at this website: http://www.glen-l.com/supplies/06123.html

I just have no idea how it would hook to the motor or anything.

That set up is so old school it's older than me but it can be used in any boat with any outboard. Personally I wouldn't use it; you may find a better set up a Cabel's.

I have an older 15hp, so I was just looking for something that would work with it.

For something like that, perhaps a trolling motor or handle operated motor would be more cost effective?

The 15 hp motor has a handle, but I have seen on a couple websites that you can modify these to be steered. I just thought it might be a little hard to see whilst manning the handle at the back of the boat.

If your motor has a tiller steer (the handle) use it. There is no problem with it and it will be easy to see. They make boats up to 20 feet long that you can get a tiller steer on it, so seeing is not a problem also your only in 15 foot boat, adding a steering wheel and console to house it will take up a lot of room. I have a 15 footer and its a tiller steer and its nice, very easy to use. my buddy has the same boat with the steering wheel and the boat is cramped for space.

It is possible to install steering on your older 15.  If I was going to do it, I would install stick steering at the front seat.

Now, with that said, let me throw a couple other things you've got to consider.  Steeering is not the only thing you need to get away from using the tiller.  You're going to need a control box to add throttle control, shifting capability and a switch to cut the motor off.  A control box, cables and hardware to hook everthing up will cost about three times what the steering will cost.  If the motor is not electric start, you will have to get up and go to the back everytime you need to start the motor.

You can probably sell your motor, buy a good used 25 with remote start, control box and cables cheaper than you could add it to your motor.

With all that in mind, that tiller steering might not look so bad after all.

Thanks for all the help guys. I think I will try the tiller this year. I will see how I like it, and then maybe next year upgrade. I am going to fish the boat as is anyways. I want to fix it up, but I figure that after a summer of fishing on it as is, I will have a better idea of what and where things need to be.

Look below your tiller handle there is a u-shaped bar that is used to carry the outboard if there is a slot made in this bar you can use the steering you mentioned.
