Uses for 6'8" heavy rod

Featured Replies

Are there any uses for a 6'8" heavy action bait casting rod? I have an extra rod that I have been trying to sell, but I want to find a use for it. Any advice would be useful. Thanks

Fast action? I'd skip docks with it

6'8" isn't all that short. 6'6" rods are my most used. Docks are a good choice. Any form of roll casting, pitching, etc. I have an old Kistler "Worm and jig brush buster" 6'8" heavy fast that I use for close quarter frogs, jigs, etc. Mine is 14 years old, guides are getting weak, but it still puts fish in the boat when I decide to put it to work.

804CJWR?

I use a 5 and 6 power jig/worm rod that is 6'10"  (2" longer) today for all my casting jig presentations for jig between 3/8 to 1 oz. Your rod is rated heavy but for from being too stiff to cast jig and big worms very effectively. I used 5 power custom Lamiglass 6'6" jig and worms rods similar to your rod for 35 years and caught lots of DD bass by casting jigs and worms with those rods.

Learn to reel set with firm rod sweep and you don't need longer rods. My average casting distance is 40 yards using rods about the same length, power and action as your rod.

Reel setting? I honestly have never tried that. But I will have to.

I would use that rod for skipping jigs under docks/over head cover. I can do it with a long rod, but it's easier IMHO with a short one.

I have a 6'10" heavy Denali rosewood frog rod that I have been looking for other uses since I do not frog a lot, have been tying jigs on it and it seems to be fine for that.
