How many lbs of trolling motor do I need?

Featured Replies

I've got a Lund Deep V 14' Aluminum that weighs between 700-800 lbs fully loaded. Im thinking I want to go with a transom mount to save money. How many lbs thrust am I going to need to make it move? Im thinking 55 range, Im not hoping to spend a fortune either, I have other accessories to purchase.

40 - 55 should do.  Definitely get a MK with Maximizer.  The maximizer will save draw on your batteries unless you are always running flat out max.  Most people don't do that anyway.

It always comes down to you can turn the trolling motor down but you can't turn it up pass max.

And you can get those power drive models with the long cord cheap. They are not great for dock fishing but cruising shore lines and slow trolling they are super.

It's easier to pull a boat than to push a boat.

Figure two pounds of thrust for every 100 pounds of boat.  Of course you have to figure in the total weight of boat, people, tackle, gear, chewing tobacco, refreshing beverages etc.   ;)

I would say it will be just fine. I have a 15 foot Starcraft V hull and it has a 9.9 merc on it. 55# bow  Minkota and a 50# transom mount. When my dad uses it he hates the bow mount so he only uses the transom mount and it pushes that boat nice. Use the advice , buy the biggest TM you can afford. just cause you have a 55# tm doesn't mean you have to use it at 100%. Bigger is better

The biggest one you can afford, dont skimp on the trolling motor you will use that more than anything else in the boat, other than your rods and reels. By the sound of it I dont think you would need a 24 volt setup.
