New MK Trolling motor...woes

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Got a new MK Powerdrive for my Xpress 17 footer, which previously had a Motorguide 40.  The mounting holes are totally different, which is fine I suppose, but now that I've drilled the holes I've realized that none but the smallest human alive will be able to get up in the storage area to get the nuts on the underside of the bolts.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this thing mounted?  I can't POSSIBLY get up in there to put the nuts on.

Self tapping heads will ultimately round out the holes and become unstable, right?

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

You could use the black rubber insert TM bolts BPS sells them or find that small human, I have one but it's costing me a college education to mount a trollingmotor.

I'd go with finding a small human myself.   ;D

I've used those thru deck, rubber mounting grommets from BPS, just don't hit anything big with the TM while you're cruising along at decent speed.  I nearly lost my TM when all but one bolt sheared off after hitting a log cruising on high speed.  I've heard many others that have had a similar experience.

Thanks guys.

I'm currently seeking one small human for temporary insertion into the cargo area of my (evidently) small boat.  Pay includes beer, lunch, and admiration from me so long as my memory lasts.

Anyone miniscule of stature but lion-like in heart close to the Front Royal area?   ;D

I wish I could recall the name of the gadgets I used but I can't. Essentially, you drill a larger hole and marine silicone them in place. Kind of like a toggle bolt but much different. I think a shop that specializes iin trolling motors  will have you answer. They are pricey but much less than a college education.

I had the same problem with my 16' Monark aluminum bass boat.  I had to take out the front deck of the boat.  That allowed me access to the underside of the bow so I could install the nuts.  Pulling the deck was not that big of a deal on my boat as the deck was carpeted then the screws were installed.  If you can see the screws on you deck it might give you access as well

I nominate Low Budget Hookers for the position.  ;D

He's too small, he might get lost in there.   :D

Not being a great mechnic I got the longest closed end wrench and duck taped one side and it worked for me. Still have one thats a pain going to try duck taping wrench to a piant stick.

have you ever heard of  [nut serts]? you drill a slightly bigger hole than the screw size your useing, the nut sert screws onto the tool and you squeeze it,it flares and fits flush with your deck, from there you can add rubber cushions for shock,if you choose, then add some lock tight to the proper size screws/bolts your useing.you could probly get the nut sert tool at any harbor frieght tool store, and you,ll find this a sturdy and more professional installation,or of coarse you can always find a person with small hands, good luck// and good fishing, :D

Funny...

I got it done today using stainless steel nutserts from my local hardware store.

I used the type that have a large flare on top making them able to be screwed in using two smaller screws.

I took the boat out today, didn't catch much of anything, but the motor held great!

Thanks for your replies!!
