Painting your boat..

Featured Replies

I am purchasing a used Jon boat in a couple weeks and the paint is looking a little.. weak. I want to give it a nice new paint job. Anybody know what kind of paint/primer/sealer I should use? Any tips or info greatly appreciated.

Go to www.iboats.com . You can find marine paint on this site. My brother and I are restoring my grandfathers 1968 Starcraft fiberglass fishing boat.

Interlux or Pettit paints seem to be the best I have found so far.

Hope this helps! Let me know what you find.

Use etching primer, and pretty much any durable type of paint you can find.  I painted my boat with an automotive finish, single stage paint and it turned out pretty good.  Much better than factory paint jobs on larger aluminum boats.  The main thing is to use etching primer.  If you don't, and there is bare metal, the paint will not stick to it.

FWIW, I used an oil based deck and floor paint to paint my old jon boat.  That was some durable stuff, but everywhere on the boat where there was bare paint, it peeled off.  It was an old beat up boat, so I didn't care, but it would have been better to have primed it.  You don't need to spend a fortune, just get the primer and you can use a $30 sprayer from Northern Tool or Wal-Mart.  You're not painting a car, and you'll never get the finish like a car, and it will get scratched when you use it.

I repainted a smokercraft aluminum boat about 15 years ago.  stripped off all the old paint, used the etching/aluminum cleaner and used an epoxy paint from the automotive parts supply.  The paint has not flaked off anywhere on the boat except in a few places on the top where I didn't remove all the old paint.  i am still amazed at how well it has held up.

Sorry I should have looked first. Looks like walnut shell blaster media is a good way to go from a previous thread.
