Leader: 100% Floro vs Fluoro Leader

Featured Replies

Hey guys, ive been intrigued by this for a while.... i bought a small spool of Suffix 100% Fluoro LEADER and was very pleased with the quality, i rarely broke my knots or broke on a fish... So i bought a big spool of Suffix 100% Fluorocarbon but it did not mention LEADER on the packaging... and somehow i broke alot at the braid to fluoro knot... Is this just bad luck? Or is there reallya difference between 100% Fluorocarbon Leader and 100% Fluorocarbon ????

Personally I think it's a marketing gimic. I use bulk fluoro for my leader material and never had any problems with it.

Its a different formula in most cases.  Leader material is very hard and is not made to be castable.  In the case of sunline shooter i believe it would be very close.

Sufix is owned by Rapala, thier line mfr is unknown to me, possibly in Germany? It's difficult to determine if the FC is 100% or a blend. Most manufactures of FC line like Seaguar or Sunline use Japanese FC technology and they tend to be extremely honest, if they say 100% FC it is!

When FC line first became availble it was all shorter leader spools, the line being very stiff. Larger spools followed much later with softer formulas that are easier to cast, however still 100% FC formulas and less expensive for 100 to 200 yard spools.

The only method to accurately evaluate FC line is by diameter, check the published diameter per pound test, it should be the same for all brands, leaders or larger spools.

Sufix falls into category where leader FC being .001 larger then castible FC.

Stick with the actual leader material. Takin the cheap way out may cost you the fish of a lifetime. Dont chance it. I was givin a 2day course of on the water fishing using both. And yes its worth the extra money.

I go with a bulk spool but I go up in test strength. If you look at the diameter of leader vs a bulk spool, the leader will be a size above the bulk spool. If I want a 6lb leader I’ll use 8lb line because that’s the size line I would be using if I bought 6lb leader

Besides Suffix, most other leaders of the same brand are actually lower diameter in the same lb rating.

Lately I been thinking about going back to mono for a leader....

Copolymer all day every day

I use Invizx bulk spools and have never had an issue. A proper knot when using floro is really important.
