Help Me Pick the Lines

Featured Replies

Since the season is winding down for me up here in Ohio I am getting everything assessed and stocking up on what I need for next season. Next season I want to start using different line and see if I can better or worse results in line changes. I am going to list my main setups with the line that is currently on them and in (what I was thinking of changing to). I have bulk spools of 6# Copoly, 10# copoly, 10# Fluoro, 12# fluoro and 40# braid.

6:1 Ardent Ranger/7' Custom Glass Rod: Cranks 10' or less; 10# Fluoro (12# Fluoro)

6:1 Ardent Ranger/ 7' Tatula Elite H: Swimbaits and C-Rig; 25# Copoly (25# Copoly)

7:1 Ardent Pro/ 6'9" Carrot Stix Wild Wild Black MH: Spinnerbait, BuzzBait, Chatterbait; 10# Fluoro (10# CoPoly)

7:1 BPS Pro Qualifier/7' Carrot Stix Wild wild Green MH: Lipless Cranks 12# Fluoro (12# Fluoro)

7:1 Ardent Elite/7' 3" Carrot Stix Wild Orange MH: Jigs and Frogs 40# Braid (40#Braid)

7:1 Ardent Elite/ 7' Carrot Stix Wild Wild Orange H: Flipping and Pitching; 40# Braid (40#Braid0

7:1 BPS Bionic/ 6'6" Wild Wild Orange M: Topwater Jerkbait; 10# Fluoro (10# CoPoly)

Ardent Bolt Spinning/ 6'10" Custom Drop Shot: Drop Shot; 25# Gliss (6# CoPoly)

Ardent Finesse Spinning/ 7' Lews Mach 2 ML: Weightless and Light Shakey Head; 25# Gliss (6# CoPoly)

President Spinning/ 6'6" Abu Veritas 2.0 M: Shakey Head and Tubes; 10# Fluro (10# CoPoly)

I am not looking for pairing critique on rods and reels just looking for opinions on line choice. As mentioned above line state is what's on the reels and line in parentheses is what I think I'm changing it to.

Line choice is in the same category as rod and reel choice.  We each have our own opinions of what is best........for us.  I assume your area is very similar to mine.  I settled on 8# for Medium power rods and 12# for MH power rods for the majority of rods....either in mono or co-poly.  A few have fluoro or braid.  I like 40# braid, but use 30# on one and 55# on another.  Both work as good as 40# as far as I can see.  I recently put 65# braid on one, but haven't used it enough yet to form an opinion.

I see you use a lot of 10# lines.  I feel certain it would work as well for me as the 8# and 12# I am currently using and would be a good compromise if I went to only one weight.  A fishing buddy likes 15# on most of his rods.  Generally I like to stay within a rod's line rating suggestion....even if 8# is the lowest on several rods.  :D

I like your line weight choices as a whole.  Personally I'd probably drop down to 8# on the Abu Veritas and custom class rods and go up to 12# on the Wild Wild Black.  Would I land more fish with my choices?  No.  Would I get more bites?  No.  I don't like heavier than 8# on spinning reels, but that is probably because 4#-8# is all I ever used as a lad and young man.  That and the fact heavier lines don't handle as well on the spinning reels I use.

Your newer line choices look good. But I'm a simple guy, and only use 4 types of line, 15 and 50lb braid, 10 and 17lb copoly. 15lb braid for a spinning setup (10lb copolymer as  a leader). Cranks, jerks, poppers, buzzbaits get 10lb copolymer. Moving baits such a swim jigs, spinner baits, swimbaits, bladed jigs get 17lb copolymer. Jigs, Texas rigs, frogs, etc get 50lb, some with a 17lb leader, some without.

This is a good choice.  I use 15 or 20 lb braid on spinning with 6 or 10 lb leader.  50 lb braid or 20 on bait casters.  20 lb is only on an alphas for finesse.  10 or 15 copolymer for most everything else.  I do have a dedicated topwater setup with 14 lb mono.
