A few weeks ago, I though the reel seat on my Calcutta 51; the ends were narrow that when I mounted on a casting rod, it would have movement.

 

I finally found out that the 2 rivets holding the reel seat onto the reel are actually what are loose. Just so much that when I mount on a rod, you can move the reel left and right, not much but enough that when fishing and reeling, the reel moves.

 

Someone on here when I did the first post about this mentioned to take off the rivets and install a screw and nut in place. Good idea, but I don't have the tools to take off the rivets. 

 

So, I was thinking. Have any of you used JB Weld? It's a 2 part epoxy. Can I use JB Weld and squeeze so much around the rivets on the reel seat? And will this keep it sold from swaying back and forth? If not JB Weld, what other options do I have to fix this?

I'm not quite sure what those rivet are made of but they are not soft. Unless you have the proper tools for drilling out the rivets I suggest ya don't even try. I'm an licensed A/P aircraft mechanic & I could not figure out how to install new ones which is why I installed screws.

Ive done the same as Catt to 2 calcuttas and several other brands. Those rivits are aluminum,and using a drill press i removed them. Take the reels with me to menards. They have a specialty screw section. The screws,lock washers,nut ant red lock tite did the trick. Just be carefull not to over tighten them. One reel i drilled out, and retapped the hole.used proper flat head screw,red lock tite. its good as new.

I’m gonna bet it’s not the rivets bud. Especially with you saying it moves side to side. The same riveted reel foot is on my Chronarch A and I too thought the rivets were loose but they wasn’t. Try this, you need to shim it in the rod,take an old credit card and cut 1-2 pieces to match your seat on your rod and see if it doesn’t get tighter. I did this to mine over 20 years ago.

It could be the rod seat is too wide and building the reel seat ends up solves the problem. Catt and others would easily figured that movement out before going though the effort of removing rivets and replacing with screws and that solved the problem.

If you don't have the skills to remove or drill out the rivets and good reel tech can do this or any good machinist can do it for you. You need a small mill bit, not a drill, to do this properly.

Abu Garcia has some also.  Some people just use electrical tape.

I don't know what kind of Calcutta y'all have but all of mine & my Cardiff's have steel rivets. I'm not sure but from my experience they appear to be Monel rivets.

 

The only way ya gonna stop the movement is to remove rivets & either replace them using the proper tools or install high strength screws. Ya don't want much if any screw above the nut.
