my battle ii broke a few weeks ago and it was the main bearing that had teeth broken off inside of it.  i bought a new one and watched a video on how to relube everything and put it back together.  go everything back together except a lone washer that wasn't even in the instructional video so i'm not sure where it went, but that's not the problem.  the gears seem really hard to turn, like when i reel it in dry it takes some serious elbow grease to turn it.  maybe not "serious" elbow grease but definitely more effort than it did when i got it brand new.  what could i have possibly done to make it have difficults rpms?  i put plenty of grease and in all the right places.  is something over tight?  does it take some time before it gets smooth again?

Most likely an issue with washers. I haven't had one of your reels open, but almost all of the spinning reels I've service had washers on both sides of the main gear. They need to go back exactly like they came out. Try Putting the "extra" washer on top of the main gear. On the side with teeth.

Not only that....add to it that some washers are directional and have a right and wrong way to face.  That's why I don't tear mine down any more than I have to.  If I want a deep cleaning or a repair, it's better to send them off.  

Just to add....that lone washer is more than likely your problem.  

Do what Gary says - most likely a spacer issue.  Without it, the gears are seated too tightly.

Try checking out the Penn Battle II diagram to find the washer location, look at 8A, or the washers in between 19 and 20, or 27 and 21.

Hmm true, I learned that the hard way with my Daiwa Type-R after cleaning it....had an extra washer sitting out and took me a bit to figure out where it went! It wasn't in the schematics...I went through each part.

 

Maybe call Penn if all else fails, their customer service is pretty good.

Thanks guys. I tried my damndest and couldn't get any combination of washer alignment to resolve the issue. For an $80 reel I am $20 in on parts and lube, probably won't be free to have Penn fix it either,  may as well have just purchased another one
