I have a 1996 40hp mariner and the buzzer is going off.

I went fishin on friday and all was fine. Saturday mornin as soon as i turned the key on the buzzer went off. The oil lvl was my first thought so i added, still going off. On friday it smoked quite a lot i thought, but figured it was because i hadn't run it in a while. I'm now thinking the oil injector is not working, but do not know if that will set off the buzzer or not?? I have good water pressure and it is not overheating so that is not it. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

The first thing you need to do is determine if it is a constant or intermitten alarm.  Then check the manual to see what the problem might be.  A friend of mine called about his and was totally wrong about which one it was.  After another trip to the water and paying attention he determined that it was indeed a water pump problem even though it was still putting out a stream.

I had that problem some years ago and after agonizing over cooling, replacing the impeller, flushing it out the buzzer still went off.  I finally decided it was the thermostat itself so I disconnected it.  (There was no source for a replacement within range.)  Then with a little procrastination added it ran for about 8 years like that.  That procrastination is great stuff but use it carefully.  ;)

Ok i think i didn't worded it wrong ... the motor does NOT have to run. As soon as i turn the key on the buzzer goes off Running or Not.

Thats why it led me to believe the oil lvl. But that is not it. Unless my sensor went out.

What i was wondering is if anyone knows that if the oil injector is malfuntioning (does that have a buzzer) that will be set off with engine off Key on.

I can't get my dealer to call me back to get some more info or a book and its over a hour away so thats why i'm asking here.

Thanks

I believe that motor has a main tank for oil and then another tank up the cowling.. If the cowling tank oil is not full to the max your senser will go off. Start your motor and remove the cap the oil will fill up when it's right up in the neck replace cap.

It's a merc. thing. If it doesn't fill up theres other problems.

...first simple thing to check...( if your 96 has this system in it)

make sure that the flotation ball in your oil tank is not stuck or saturated with oil.

I had this same problem and several marinas told me that I needed this and needed that and not a single estimate was under $600...took it to an old man we fish with and he immediately took the sensor out of the oil tank and said...

"yep...see...stuck and satuarated, if you buy a new one they are made of plastic and they wont do this"

took 5 minutes to change and cost $18 for the snesor...
