Dobyns 704cb or 705cb glass

Featured Replies

I have tried to do as much research as I could on these two rods. I am only going to be using this rod for 3/8 cranks like a rapala DT6 and roundbill and square balsa cranks again all weighing 3/8. So should I buy the 704cb graphite or the 705cb glass? I will be using it mainly in very sparse vegetation and just ticking the tops of grass. I can't get my hands on one to feel it out. I really appreciate the help.

I wanted to add it is the champion model 704cb and 705cb glass that I'm asking about

I’ve researched this quite a bit myself lately... from what I understand, a lot of people use the 704cb for jerkbaits and smaller, shallower cranks like you mentioned. Most people use the 705cb glass for squarebills and traps and maybe some small-medium sized topwater walking baits. I’ve heard it described as a little bit stiffer initially than the graphite 705cb, but you feel the characteristic glass taper once you hook into a fish. Imo, the graphite 705cb is the most versatile of the 3. The tip loads nice and transitions into a strong backbone towards the butt end of the rod. The rod is labeled for use with jerkbaits, crankbaits, traps, and spooks.

Well that is a dilemma if the rod is only throwing 3/8. . I use the 705cb glass for what you want to use it for but also fish around a lot of wood so I like to have a little more rod to move the fish. 704 will load a little better and cast the bait further than you need to really. If you like a little "less" of a rod loads a lot, get the 704. If you want a little more rod that will also load just fine, get the 705 glass.  Both will work fine.

I would say it probably depends on how much grass you have to pull them through. If you are looking to fish open waters with 10-12lb line max, the 704cb is probably a good bet. If you might load it up with heavier line when the grass and weeds get thick, get the 705CB. If you want the ultimate cranking experience, get both.

I also gather the Dobyns rods run light, so the medium heavy 705CB is probably more like a good solid medium or maybe slightly on the heavier side.

The 705 glass it is. Thank you for the insight.
