40 or 50 lb braid and leader?

Featured Replies

On a baitcasting setup (7'3" MHF) used for frogs, large texas-rigged worms, and1/4 ounce jigs, what lb braid would you suggest? What leader would you pair it with?

Thanks

frogs 50 (at least), the other two 40.

This is pretty spot on. Maybe 65 for the frog.

One rod?....You should be fine with 40# braid.  I typically use 50, with no leader for frogs but would have no problem with 40lb. 95% of the time.  I don't like 50# for any jigs under 1oz.   I would recommend leader that is somewhat close to the diameter of your braid.... probably around 15-17

Since it sounds like you are planning on using this rod for all of these techniques I would say 50lb. You’ll need that for frogging. As far as a leader I am a huge fan of Seaguar Abrazx for my leaders on these techniques. 15-17#. Very abrasion resistant, low stretch, and sensitive. My frog rod I use 50lb braid. My jig rod and Texas rig rods I use 30lb braid. Hasn’t failed me yet.

I frog in thick stuff, 65 lb braid no leader.

Jigs and worms I use 30 lb braid, still no leader.

Sounds like to do this on one setup, 50 lb braid would be best. Then if in clear water, tie on a 15-17# leader.

I think that's your best bet. I usually go 50 or 65 on frogs, 30 or 40 for light t-rigs, and 40 for jigs. If you don't frog in really heavy stuff 40 might be fine.

Either braid should be fine for both on one rod. I would definitly run a flouro leader though on all but frog. I use seaguar blue label leader in 15 or 20# for that on 40# power pro. The leader gives me 2 advantages over straight braid, its far more abrasion resistant as well as i can brwak the leader off instead of cutting my line on a bad snag. You can break a reel seat on a rod pulling too hars trying to break or free a snag with heavy braid. Ive done it.

For similar baits, I go with 40. It's a little bit light for frogs, but not too bad.

I use 40 lb braid, plenty strong enough and works well for me.

My waters have good visibility, at least 3’ on bad days up to 10’ ,  And I don’t use leaders, they are for humans with mental problems.:P
