My Bass Tracker drifts bad w/wind

Featured Replies

I have the pro 17 tracker and it seems im fighting the trolling motor more than fishing.Even when the wind isnt that bad at all.Is there anything you can buy to stabilize these boats? The front drifts more i guess because its lighter. Any suggestions would be great. I hate feeling the pain in the ars when i get to the lake and end up fighting the boat more than fishing.

do you trim your outboard out of the water?

You should leave some of it in the water so it act like a rutter to stabilize the boat.

Also, when you are using your TM is your power setting in the higher range?( I don't mean the power of the motor, but what speed your running it at) why I ask, is my father-inlaw has trouble controling his Tracker PTX 175. Then I watched him run it. He keeps his TM on high and when we moves the boat, it moves to far and when he goes to corect it, he over powers the corections . I ran the boat and had no problem with controling the boat and keeping it stable. Its alot with learning how to use your TM corectly. try running your TM at slower speeds.

And if there is some wind and you  are in need of control. put your tm on constant power at a very low speed setting. This way you will always be moving, which will keep the boat in control, and slowly moveing along. and always work into the wind and/or current, this will help contrtol the boat better.

I fully agree with both George and  HPBB.  Depending on the wind, each technique will work.

Does it have a factory Trolling motor? If so it is probably way under powered and needs to be upgraded to at least a 50lb thrust motor.

I have the Pro-185 Tracker and this is what I have done.

I had my trolling motor upgraded to 67 pounds of thrust.

I move over the water like a bullet in the light, aluminum boat.

Wind will drive you nuts in any bass boat, espically a light weight Tracker.

But looking at the overall advantages of the Tracker over the heavier fiberglass boats you have to admit that you can get into places that the heavier boats cannot which gives you a strong advantage in creeks and low water trees and stumps.

Yesterday on the upper James River I let the wind float the boat down river.  I went downriver backwards so I fished from the rear of the boat at times.  I was by myself so who cared?

Please consider upgrading your existing trolling motor to a higher thrust.  In the Richmond, Virginia area, Billy Wells on Jeff Davis Highway does this all the time. He is the trolling motor king in this part of the world.

Have fun!

Thanks guys! Yeah its the factory 30lb thrust motor guide.I run it on the lowest setting but when any little wind starts, its not long before im out in 50 ft. of water. Im gonna try the drift sock as well to get it balanced some. The TM only looks to be in the water 1 foot so the front is very light.Maybe the sock will get me through this summer untill i can get a big 60+thrust TM. I tried running the tm on idle but its still way to fast on low.I like to take my time around rocky points and brush.

I have a 55 # thrust motor on my 1548 jon.  It's plenty powerful for such a small boat.   But since most of the time it's generating only a fraction of that thrust, I have problems tracking in wind.  I never pull my main motor out of the water when I'm using the bow trolling motor.  If I do, I'm blown around in circles with even the slightest wind.   I think if you leave your motor down you will see significant improvement.

all the alum boats get blown around in the wind...it is the nature of the beast.

..a 30lbs trolling motor...I do not know what Tracker is thinking with that stuff...you would be more successful with a 2 yr old and a Barbie paddle! ;D

..a bigger motor will be helpful, my proteam 17 has a 55# TM, but you are still going to get pushed around. I have greatly increased my fishing success by being able to fish an area thoroughly and slowly...and I use my anchor to that.

drop it....fish...move down 20 yards...drop it...fish...move down 20 yards...

seems like alot of work but I will tell ya there is alot to be said for being able to concentrate on your fishing and not to be fighting the TM all day long.

DELee36,

I use my anchor, too.

I love to sit in front of a submerged tree and throw all sorts of stuff at the target and by anchoring I can achieve this result.

Yes, it is more work but by anchoring it is truly worth the extra effort.
