After moving away in 2006, I have lived in the southeast and out west in Utah. Im excited to say I got hired for a job in upstate! Cant wait to get moved and get my boat out on the water. I'll be posting more in this section now, and looking forward to making new friends and maybe even joining a bass club. See you fellas on the water! 2018 is going to be a good year!

I'm glad you're excited about moving back.  On the other hand, I'm thinking you got out of this over-regulated, over-taxed, corrupt-governed hellhole... why would you want to return?

Wanna get me a job there too?  I moved away from the 1000 Islands area almost 2 and a half years ago to the DC metro area...I miss the fishing up there.  There's just no place in the country like it.  Congrats man!

There are certainly going to be pros and cons to living anywhere. At this point in my life, as long as my wife has a place for her horses and I have some decent bass fishing nearby, we will be happy. The property taxes do seem outrageous in the villages, so we'll be careful where we buy.

 Most people have no idea how wonderful most all of upstate NY is for outdoor lovers.

 

As for taxes, I live in a tiny "village" of about 1000 pop. inside a "town" with a slightly larger population.  I therefore have the privilege of paying property taxes to the village and the town.  The area is very depressed and our school ranks last or next-to-last in the district.  I pay over $6K in property taxes annually and could not sell my home for enough money to buy another place in a better area.

 

On the other hand, I'm a mile from the border of the Adirondack Park, surrounded by beautiful scenery and wonderful fishing opportunities.  I'm a mile from Lake Champlain and 11 miles from Lake George.  I'm about four hours from the Atlantic coast, New York City, and Montreal.  The Great Lakes aren't much further.  In less than an hour, I can be at some of the best VT ski areas or the horse track at Saratoga.

 

I look at the high taxes as the price I pay to be surrounded by lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, and fishing.

Yeah it's true the taxes in some of those NY counties are so high that it tanks house values, but you end up paying as much as you would elsewhere on a house 2-3 times the cost.

 

But there are some great spots for outdoors, especially in the Lake George - Lake Champlain area and the Adirondacks. There's a house for sale on Great Sacandaga Lake I wouldn't mind buying...

Welcome back!  Canandaigua is a beautiful little "city."  Planners though that it would become the major metropolitan area, but it was Rochester that actually became the big city.  Too bad, streets in Canandaigua are laid more sensibly that our crazy layout.  Victor, NY is close to Canandaigua, and is the hot spot for housing.  Farmington is right next door, and is a bit more rural, without being out in nowhere.

I grew up in the Rochester area, so I'm pretty familiar with the areas you mentioned. My wife and I are both excited for the move - she wants to go look at a place out in Bloomfield when we get out there. I'm not complaining.
