skipping a shaky head. Why can't I do it?

Featured Replies

Hey guys. Great forum. I've been lurking for a while but I've finally got a question worth asking. I can skip a 3/8 jig, a senko, a frog, etc...with no problem at all,  but there is something about a shaky head that seems to dig hard as soon as it hits the water. Any suggestions on methods and/or head size/set ups? Thanks guys.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I can't help you with skipping a bait but there are a lot of people on here that can help you.

Go a lighter weight, and use a flat top head. They make some shakey heads that are flat, they are designed for keeping the bait vertical in the water column. That flat head being light skips right over it. Also the lighter the weight the better the action is on the fall and it stays in the strike zone longer. Good luck bro.

Yeah I've been thinking a lighter weight may help. I've been using a 3/16 owner head because the docks Im targeting are in some fairly deep water. I can skip the 3/16th but not very well. Its just odd because I can skip a 3/8oz jig about a mile, and a senko even further but the little shaky head gives me fits.

It's because you have more surface area with a long worm worm attached.

Lower your trajectory and experiment with the speed.

It'll skip

keep working at it , just got in to it better on lake fork this year with a ned rig. the challenge is fun

Im sure it can be done, but I've never tried. Yet I'm curious as to why you would want to skip a shaky head worm ? What fishing situation would actually call for this ?

You can skip it under docks and other overhangs so that you aren't restricted to the edges of that cover

I guess personally, I would go to spinning tackle and rig a 3 1/2" Tube with a 1/4oz insert hook , in that situation. But I can see maybe what your saying. Though I guess when I think about skipping anything, a worm is last on the list, because of the elongate shape. Plus I've never seen a worm skip on the surface, but I have seen baitfish do this when being chased by a Bass. So that tube is a more effective approach for me when skipping and also to create the fleeing action which can provoke feeding behavior.

I use a more compact worm and a standup style football shakyhead to skip under overhanging trees. It's really easy to do with the setup I use.
